Don't go and buy lenses now, it is most certainly not the real problem. Wait until you know how to use the DSLR that you are still interested and will know what subject you need the lens...

Depends on what you call vital functions? It would be manual focus. I also don't see a way to set the f/stop so you may only be able to shoot wide open - in this 50mm case only at f/1.8?
