HDR Machines
 

Hi all, I was in the mine with my camera again in the past week and took a few HDR shots for a report one of my colleague was compiling and thought I would post them for your comments and suggestions.

I'm not a fan of the over the top look of some HDR images but these aren't too bad , when you say you took some HDR images do you mean you shot a bracketed set of images and then used software to combine them or does your camera have a HDR mode .
I ask because some of the shots don't have the wide dynamic range of a full spread of exposures ( lost detail in the shadows ) .

Personally, I would not use the prog. that you did. Feel the results would be better, and, more realistic. Also shooting at a very high shutter speed, and, large aperture, not the combination, for these type of pics. Ed.

Hi Ed & Mark, thanks for your input! I was playing around with my auto lighting optimiser when I took these photos. I used 3 bracketed photos (-2;0;+2), the wide open aperture and fast shutter speed were to accomodate hand held shots and negate ghosting. I do understand they may not be for everyone's taste, but do appreciate the critique. Will post something not HDR after the weekend. Chat again soon!

HI Edmack,
Please can you explain why this is the case?
I've never shot HDR before, but it's something I'd like to try in the near future and would love to try heavy metal like Keyserj has here. But when I look at his pictures, it seems the site is live, and has movements, so without speed would it even be possible to make the HDR shot via bracketing still?

It looks like a great site you've found here, lots of opportunity for some interesting and powerful shot. I wonder if you have some off-camera flashes or even torch, to go back at night time or evenings in the weekend when everyone has gone home, I bet there is some amazing shots to be had then! :D (obviously, don't break any rules and get into trouble!)

Hi Justin, im really not a fan of HDR mainly because its normally well over done butthese are good numbers 5-6 are excellent.

I don't have the experience or technical knowhow to say why it's good but I really like the 6th photo.

Perhaps not the most useful critique you'll get but hope you don't mind me sharing my opinion.

Thanks for your replies, and apologies for the slow response, I have been really tied up the past few weeks and haven't had much time to spend on net. The site is very much alive and is awsome to see at night with spontaneous combustion that lights up the coal faces with blue, purple and red halogen lighting that is complimented by the loading lights which illuminate the machines and their surrounds in a surreal fashion. Hoping to find a safe location to set up for some long exposures.

I like HDR pictures, and tryed it myself a month ago.

Your pictures are good, but in my eyes 6 and 7 are top!
Look at those clouds and the green grass in the last one.
I realy enjoy looking at it, thank you for that!

6 and 7 are my favorites as well. They feel more...atmospheric? Moody? Dystopian? Something along those lines. Nice work!
