Sensor cleaning??
 

Hi,

I have some dust spots/dirt on my sensor so am thinking about getting it cleaned. I'm wary about doing this myself because I've never done it before. I know that there are plenty of products on the market for sensor cleaning, so I thought I would ask if anyone has any experiences of using these?

Any help or advice appreciated. Or am I better off paying to get it done professionally??

Have you tried a blower? They may just come off with air. I picked up an Arctic Butterfly for a great deal a year of so ago and have used it. It works well but if something is really stuck you will need to go wet. I would get someone else to do that.

I haven't tried a blower yet. Been watching some videos on YouTube so have an idea. My local shop charges £30 and I'm tempted to pay them to do it. It'll save me damaging the sensor!

I have found most times the blower does it although I have wet cleaned it myself in the past, if it was me I would be tempted to try a blower and if that doesn't do it then I would be tempted to use your local shop as probably the cost of buying the liquid and swabs would not be far off that cost anyway.

If you are careful when changing lenses etc it should not need a full clean that often anyway!

Cheers Dave. I think I'll give it a go with a blower, see how that goes. This is the first time in about 4 years so I guess £30 isn't too bad if I need to take it in to get done.

That is not bad if you have gone 4 years! Blowers are cheap (DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE COMPRESSED AIR FROM A CAN!) and all you have to do is squeeze.

Chris the only bit of advice that I would give if the blower doesn't work and you take the camera in for cleaning is to get the shop to take a test shot first and keep a copy of it so that both you and the shop are in agreement with how much dust is visible before any work takes place , I have heard of people getting their cameras back after they have been cleaned only to find them in a worse state than before .

I have used the compressed air before, as recommended b y my local camera shop........was that a bad move?

The cans of compressed air can if held at an angle spray out liquid as well so not a good idea to use
