Full frame upgrade
 

Looking to upgrade to full frame from my D70 soon and the choice is there for using my nikon lens collection. Would really like to see a price reduced D600 without video,shame the 700 is discontinued that ticks a lot of my boxes (batteries,cards etc) although they do come up at camera shops occasionally. Have even considered d3/x,the search continues.

the d700 is an excellent camera and uses the same sensor as the d3 if you can find one with low use you won't go far wrong

It would help if you said what type of photos you like taking. You say you could use you collection of D70 lenses, but most of them are DX, which means you can't use the full frame of an FX camera. :p

If you have a collection of FX lenses, and you aren't into action shots, then consider the Nikon D800 but you will need a fast computer and plenty of harddisk space, as the Jpeg file are about 20mb, the NEF between 40mb to 50mb and Tiffs are 105mb. :p

I imagine that these stats will make people think long and hard when choosing between the D600 and the D800.
My laptop is pretty quick but the D800 would push it to its limits I'd suggest. :(

I presume that you're aware that any DX lens will not work with the D600 except on DX-mode which would defeat the object of going FF. So, I'm assuming that you've been using FX lenses with your D70 and they're either modern or older 35mm film lenses, in which case you must be careful as older film lenses will not fit the D600 (attempts to do so will damage the body).
So much for the glass. IMHO the D600 is a D5100 with a FX sensor shoehorned into it. It's a bit plasticky and not weatherproofed. I'm not even very impressed with the D800 and consider my D700 to be far better build-quality and would recommend you look out for a second hand one of these.

Well, you can override the auto-DX selection and get some opportunities for more creative cropping. Some DX zoom lenses cover the full FX image circle at parts of their zoom range.

Any F-mount lens that fits the D70 will fit the D600. AI, AI-S and E models will give Aperture Priority in addition to metered Manual exposure , on the D70 they give only manual with no meter.

The D600 is pretty much an FX version of the D7000, but with improved AF & Metering, and some other stuff like better video.

The lenses I have are nikkor 50mm f/1.4d,nikkor 28mm f/2.8d and afs 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 ifvred.

Never had a D700 but my D800 is fantastic camera if you have good glass to use with it. It's not an action camera but for still shots it's great. Using my Nikon 300mm F4 on it like using a 900mm F4 on the D3. :D

All of these will be fine on FX DSLRs.

I thought they would be,thanks for confirming,I nearly jacked my slr in due to poor image quality but have since found a new lease of life so to speak after junking some cheaper lenses and getting the nikkor kit.
