mirror lockup and remote triggers
 

hello,

i have a Canon 500D, which is was trying to take some night landscape pics. so i thought i would use standard ideas of using mirror lockup along with my hahnel wireless remote to control the exposure in bulb mode and thus take as much shake out of the equation. When i tried to fire the trigger remotely the camera decided to both open and shut the lense almost instantly. I tried a few more times in case i was being a muppet but the same thing kept happening, once i had disabled the lockup function from the menu the camera returned to normal remote mode. The remote trigger is a hahnel giga t pro two.

did i do something wrong? how can i correct this?

Are you sure? The mirror going up sounds almost like the shutter going. You need to push the shutter button twice to take a photo when using mirror lock up. The first time does the mirror, the second the shutter.

I have a 500d as well, and can vouch for what Donoreo is saying. It really threw me when I first started to use mirror lock up, in that I had to press the remote shutter release once to lock up the mirror, then a second press and hold to open the shutter.

If you are still having problems, try using Live View, which should lock up the mirror and therefore achieve the same thing. If this doesn't work either, I'd suggest it's a problem with the remote.

The sound can throw you as what we often think is the sound of the shutter is actually the mirror flipping up. The shutter is surprisingly quiet in comparison.

Why not try it indoors [B]before[/B] you go out? It's a lot less frustrating if you're in the warm & dry.

Glad you got it sorted.

I'm not sure if you know, but the other benefit of using live view when you have the camera in bulb, is that it puts a timer/counter on the lcd display, as soon as the shutter is opened which saves trying to look at your watch in the dark, to time your exposures.
