Mist on the Lake

Just a couple of shots from an early morning visit to one of my favorite locations at a local lake , the mist made for some beautiful scenes so I hope I've gone some way to do them justice .

This one I liked because of the muted colours and the softness of the whole scene .

This one was taken just as the mist started to lift and it made the island seem as if it was floating above the water .

As always I would really appreciate any critique and tips on how to improve my work .

i really like that first one, Mark, looks really ethereal. did you apply a colour wash, or is it straight from camera like that? looks like a beautiful location.

i really like them both. the 1st one is dreamlike and dramatic and the reflections are wonderful. the 2nd one has amazing colours and you have captured the moment perfectly

Both great shots.
Particularly like the feel of the first one, and love the symmetry. Would like to see it in black and white too, although it probably wouldn't look much different. Looks like you've got a good spot there.

Thank you all very much for your feed back ,

Alex , both image's have had very little PP work a tweak of levels is about it so yes it is as close to reality as possible . The first shot was one of the first I took that morning and the sun wasn't quite up yet so the light was beautifully diffused through the mist .

Chris , thank you very much for taking the time out of your holiday to comment on my shots , I'm really glad you thought I had captured the moment as this is one of the disciplines I would really like to master , capturing the atmosphere or feeling of a location and not just the scene itself .

Jediboy , it is a beautiful location but it never ceases to amaze me how quickly the scene changes as the sun comes up , I was running around like a loon trying to photograph different areas as the light changed and the image of the trees just appeared infront of me as I was legging it down the footpath . I haven't tried a B&W conversion yet but I will have a look but your probably right not sure if you'll notice much of a difference .

really like the first one you are drawn through the picture. not so keen on second i think the for ground is a bit busy, i would like to see it cropped out as i think it takes away from the lovely colours

Really like the first image with the reflections on the water.

the second image I think the foreground detracts from the image

DigiDiva 21-11-12 03:50 PM

i wonder how the first one will change if you alter the white balance in raw?

markgozz 21-11-12 09:54 PM

wave01 and 2Beers thank you very much for your feed back , really glad you like the first image and I totally understand what you say about the second because that was my concern about it too . I tried all sorts of different positions to avoid the foreground under growth but there was no way I could get the island and the background trees appearing through the mist without those darn reeds getting in shot , I did try some more severe cropping but thought this one was the best I could get .

Chris , just had a go with the raw image and various white balance settings but to be honest the resulting colour cast didn't look that great but after Alex ( alexharrison101 ) ask about a colour wash it got me thinking about an Andy Warhol inspired pop art style finish , the one with four repeated images with different colour finishes so if I get time I might have a go at that .

Thanks again to you all I really appreciate your input .

i would like to offer a suggestion make another layer use the grad tool and fill it with white and then drop the opacity down use a mask and you can paint in some more mist it will hide the fore ground and you are taken to the rest of the picture
