Full Frame Foray
Hi all - I'm looking for some advice from you fine peeps.
I am about to upgrade from a 20D to a 5D Mk1 - I'm pretty sure that is the right move but I welcome any opinions... I took some good advice from here and elsewhere when I started getting into photography and spent my money on lenses rather than the body!! As a result I have the following:- Sigma EX DG 10-20mm f3.5-5.6 Sigma EX DG 18-50mm f2.8 I love both these lenses but I believe they are both no good to me on my prspective full frame body. In the long run I would like a Canon 24-105 L lens but for the time being i'd like to pick up a couple of cheaper "pre-loved" lenses that complement the 5D. I've looked the Sigma 17-35mm EX DG - does this work on full frame? What are my other options??? |
hi IMHO i would look at the 5d mk2 the 5d mk1 is the same vintage as your 20d

Now you've got me thinking.....
I can't afford a 5D MKII. Should I be going for a 40D instead??? |
whats your budget
Now you've got me thinking.....
I can't afford a 5D MKII. Should I be going for a 40D instead???
The 40D was released in 2007, and has now been discontinued by Canon. So you'd have to buy second-hand, they are going for about £300 on ebay at the moment. The 50D has also been discontinued and has been replaced by the 60D. The 60D (body only) is available for £660 from Amazon, £689 from WEX or £510 from Hong Kong*, but then if you are going to buy from Hong Kong, you might want to look at the 7D for £789!! Good luck with your decision, I've been looking to upgrade my camera since last Christmas, and still haven't decided. Regards Nick * I've not bought from Hong Kong, so I'm not too sure how they are able to offer the products so much cheaper. It might be the exchange rate, or different base prices set by Canon in different markets, but I've also heard that some suppliers may not declare the correct value of goods to HMRC, only paying the VAT and import duty if the goods get stopped. So there's an ethical dilemma as well as which camera body dilemma to overcome :-) p.s. Canon won't give you warranty on grey import camera bodies |
My budget is realistically £500 max but I've got a couple of options locally.
I know someone selling a 5Dc with battery grip and 50mm f1.8 for £500. (I've got a BG-E2N from my 20D and a 50mm already so these will go to offset the cost! so i'm figuring £380 nett for the 5Dc) I also know someone selling a mint 40D for around £275 I'm basically trying to decide 5Dc vs 40D +£100 towards my first L glass...... I've been offered a 28-135 Canon IS f3.5-5.6 - what are your opinions on this lens? |
iv'e had both the 40d and the 5dc in fact i sold the 40d and replaced it with a 5dc because i wanted full frame and the better iso capabilities of the 5dc
the only advantage the 40d has over the 5dc is a better frame rate and in your case you can still use you existing sigma lenses the difference between the 40d and the 50d isn't much ( i have one of those too :) ) but out of the 2 i would get the 50d and if your concerned about the lenses you already own it would seem to be a good choice as they go for not a lot of money at the moment considering i paid 900 quid for mine at launch i like the 5dc it's a cracking camera and still holds it's own today and for the money the can be had for is still considered a bargain the 40d is another camera that gives great results but i think the 50d is a better buy for similar money |
