TTL Flash Guns
 

Me again.

Looking for a suitable flashgun for my D7000. Would ideally prefer a Nikon brand but how do you rate 3rd party brands like Nissin and Metz?

I don't often take indoor photographs but recently attended a wedding and was caught short. Any recommendations or experiences of these brands?

I generally have camera in M mode and wondered if these flashes 'speak' to the camera to give the correct flash setting etc.

look at the nissin range

I don't know Nissin and Metz, I use a SB-900 AF Speedlight on my D7000 and I'm very happy with it

I bought the Nissin Di8622 MkII flash for my Canon 60d in October. I used it in earnest at a wedding 2 weeks ago and I've been happy with it so far, plenty of power for bouncing the flash which is what I wanted. I use my camera in full manual and the camera and flash do 'talk' to one another in ttl mode and I have experimented with wireless link too. Flash recharging times was slightly problematic but it could have been my technique. It is quite power hungry so a spare set of batteries is necessary.

As always you get what you pay for and this flash was half the price of the equivalent Canon 580EX MKII flash. I haven't come across any downsides yet because It's not been used that much. I looked at the Canon 430EX MKII which was approximately the same price but I felt I would have outgrown it after a few months or jobs whichever came first. For true compatibility and to negate any issues get a Nikon. I'm not sure but I think the Nikon equivalents to the Canon are SB700 and SB900, the Nissin being the Di622 MKII and Di8622 MKII.

Thanks for the feedback and advice. Recently upgraded to the d7000 and just bought a new lens so budget is a little tight leading up to Xmas but also hoping to get decent flash that'll serve me for a while.
I will definately look into the Nissin range.

I would go with Beers, but I've not come across the Yongnuo 585ex, maybe he got the number wrong.
I have two Yonguo YN565EX guns which are dedicated to Canon/Nikon, plus their latest one the YN568EX Which is capable of HSS.
These are cheaper than other makes and IMO much better value for money. I've also just bought their latest wireless flash triggers. Not had much time to play with them, but again look very good value for money.

Playing with my Yonguo's A while back I took this photo using both of them controlled wirelessly from my Canon 7D. Flower placed on my computer desk with a black card placed behind the flower.
