Opening .NEF in Elements
 

Help - I too am having trouble opening raw (.nef) files in Elements 10. Get an error message telling me it doesn't recognise this file type...???? I don't understand... What else do I need to install to be able to access my raw files?

What camera model? Have you updated Elements? The Nef should actually open in Adobe Camera Raw.

Hi, I have the PS Elements RAW 6.5 with my PSE 9 and it worked fine for my then, D300. However, having moved to a D800, Elements RAW 6.5 does not want to know! I understand that the newer RAW 7.1 is the ticket, but that is not compatable with PSE 9.

Does anyone know how and or when that might change, or is this another price ploy to have us upgrade our PSE?!

upgrade is one answer but turn them into dng files is another way

ACR6.5 won't recognise the .nef files from the D800 as it is too new. As Wave10 says other than upgrading, saving as dng files is the answer. Or you could buy Lightroom.

Hi, Many thanks for the suggestion with the .dng. Having downloaded the file, it works! The Adobe Camera Raw then opens and is fully functional, the only difference seems to be the output, the resolution drops from 300dpi to 240dpi. It also seems to remove much the 'fringing' on the contrast edges when compared to the same image put through Nikon Capture NX2?
