disguising my camera
When I started out in photography many [ 30 + ] year,s I alway,s LUSTED after a Nikon;Since converting to digital recently and purchasing a D90 & D200 + Various lenses I have chosen to disguise my camera body,s by covering over the NIKON / D200; BADGE using a BLACK felt pen .Likewise with my D90.I have also replaced the NIKON straps with plain less significant straps.
To some of you this may seem a bit pointless but it makes me feel safer when out and about Your,s martinG |
Do you do a lot of street photography in some seedy, urban areas prone to gangland activity, Martin? Otherwise, I cannot honestly see why you would need to do this...

To be honest I thought this was a Viz 'Top Tip' , but I did replace my camera strap with an older 3rd party strap so it didn't look new and attractive to magpies.

Well if it makes you feel safer then that's great but personally I don't think anyone that will want to nick a camera will go shopping for a particular model or brand, they will see a camera and that would be enough.
Then again I suppose it is embarrasing owning a Nikon:D:D:D Maybe you can get some Canon stickers to hide your embarrasment;) Seriously though just a bit of good old Nikon/Canon banta which is traditional in these parts. I do think you have hit on a very serious point and have to say I do feel a little wary when I go out at night with my DSLR and people can sometimes get funny as they assume you are trying to take shots of them especially when the have a bit of booze on board. |

But for the rest of it, I'm struggling to think of a situation when I'd want to go to the lengths you've gone to. Whatever you do with your felt tip pen, it's still going to look like a high-end DSLR and be a target (if those are the circles you're moving in). I happily wander the streets of London, New York & Las Vegas, and have just got back from a trip to India having previously 'done' Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the Carribean, Sub-Saharan Africa and South America. There's been a few covetous glances, but I have never, for one moment, felt threatened. The only time I lost gear as when my house was burgled! |
