purchase advice

Hello every one,

Thanks for having me in this forum, being a complete beginner, I'm looking for some advice.

I play in a band, a DIY band, which means we do all ourselves, including our videos. Now in this age, video is as important for a band as the music.
For our song videos, but as well for concerts, behind the stage footage, studio recordings,... fans love that
until now we had a friend shooting our videos with a 7D, but he's not available anymore so I have decided I should buy one.
I don't have a big budget, so 7D or higher is a bit too expensive for me

what camera could I get that is cheaper than 7D, work with lenses, shoot in HD & the resolution is good enough to be used for TV & theater projection? (i 've been told 1080p +)

thanks a lot for reading this!

I think you might be better advised to look at video cameras. I think the video feature on DSLRs is better suited to movie use - short clips, limited DOF, focus pulling and all of those other cool film things. If you want to sit it on a tripod & play your geetar, it's probably not going to give you what you want.

thanks for the reply
to be honest, all our band videos were made with 5D & 7D and the results are pretty amazing
lot of bands are using DSLR nowadays for their videos
plus the fact of using lenses is a nice bonus
i dont know if video cameras can use them too
anyway, i'll have a look on that too
thanks

DSLRs will really only shoot about 20 mins of movie footage so wouldn't be great for recording a whole concert but would be ok for recording a single song or backstage. What is your budget?

500 euros, then another 500 for the lenses i guess (at least the wide angle one, its a must for us)
what about the canon 550D? is that good enough?

Canon 5D MKII and 7D were the cameras of choice for DSLR filmmaking, they probably still are but I haven't kept up to date with trends. Neither camera is within your budget let alone the lenses. However, there are plenty of alternatives including the Canon 550D and Panasonic models of DSLR.

Greenwing is correct, a 'video' camera may be a better alternative and cheaper. Filming with a DSLR isn't easy especially if the operator doesn't have much filming or photography experience. Video cameras can use 35mm lenses with adaptors, 'Red Rock Micro' for one.

How will you edit your footage as this is so often overlooked and it is paramount? Full HD is a lot of data, do you really need it for 'Youtube'?

Where are you as I offer this free to bands.

I use a 60D as I prefer it to the 7D, but have just bought 2 D7000s as they beat both hands down, however to do it properly I prefer my Panasonic 3MOS camera with Rode mic

let me know
