ND9 or ND10 ????
 

Which filter is better for the Canon 450D, an[I] ND9[/I] or an [I]ND10[/I]......or doesn't it matter which one I use?

I'm wanting to use it for waterfalls and seascapes.......and anything else the filter is used for.

Its for my 18-55mm kit lens, so it must have a 58mm thread.

Also I've looked on the internet for the filter, but I can hardly find any. Where can I purchase them from?

i got a variable ND filter from amazon for under £10. now, i'm not saying it's gonna be great, but it's cheap and if you're new to NDs (like me) then it might be a better option until you know which strength you're going to use more often.i got this one: [url]http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0059ZPRMM/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00[/url] which is a 58mm thread. the higher the number (ND10 as opposed to ND9) the darker the filter, so the longer you can keep the shutter open before blowing the highlights. i think. hopefully someone with mroe experience will come along soon lol :D

What brand are you talking about? I'm not sure if you have your terminology right here. Do you mean an ND0.9? Cokin classify their ND filters as 2X, 4X and 8X which equate to 1 stop, 2 stops and 3 stops respectively. Lee filters classify their NDs as 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 - again, 1, 2 and 3 stops. They also do a 1.2, 4 stop filter. You might also be referring to the Lee Big Stopper 10x which is a ten stop filter. You'll probably have to wait 5 months to get it once you have ordered it and your wallet will be about £100 lighter.

Thanks for the message, but I wouldn't trust anything which is that cheap. Also, I don't use Amazon (I tried using my debit card and it wouldn't accept, so I gave up with the website).

I have one of [url=http://www.formatt.co.uk/stills-filters/filters/standard-n-d/pro-stop.aspx]these[/url] the 85mm version will work in a standard Cokin P adaptor.

I have the 10 stop images do need some white balance correction in PP but the results are pretty good, what stop filter you need depends on where you are shooting i.e. how much light there is in reality you will probably need a selection of different ND filters depending on the situation although the 10 stop will gurantee a long exposure in most situtations although it could be too long.

EDIT:Its for an 85mm thread. I have no idea why I put 58mm!!

Odd. SRB list 82mm and 86mm, but not 85mm. Do you mean 85mm square, Cokin P size?

That would be some size of a front element for a kit lens. :D

The 18-55 kit lens has a 58mm thread Id like to see a picture of this massive front element on your kit lens

My mistake again. Its a 58mm thread. I didn't read it correctly.
