Olympic ban on all SLRs
 

According to the prohibited list for my Olympic venue (Wembley),all so-called professional style cameras, which they define as cameras with interchangeable lens, are banned!

Isn't that all SLRs?

Since no storage facilities will be available, it seems that SLR cameras will be confiscated (and not returned) or the ticketholder will simply be turned away.

It seems that other venues will operate different policies, banning only large professional cameras or tripods etc.

It looks like an obsession with branding and money making will make this another olympic fiasco.

It makes the photo competitions relating to the olympics and advice to use a telephotos lens fairly redundant doesn't it?

I wonder if the specialist photo press can sort this confusion out....

That sounds like madness to me. But nothing surprises me.

I fail to see how it will make them that much more money.

Surely it's a perk for the security people? All the cameras you can carry.

It's not just DSLRs that have interchangeable lenses.

And CSC, some bridge cameras and even some compacts like my Canon A640 not that officials will be able to tell! The criteria will probably be oooh that's a nice camera we'll ave that!

I don't understand why they are banning them tbh if it is for distractions of flash etc???

I think if it is flash then they will have more problems with point and click cameras or even camera phones.

I went to Devon county show a few years ago and had been asked to take some photos by wifes boss who exhibits there, I went into the cattle shed and got a lecture from a security guard about using flash I politely told him that my flash was not popped up I dan't use it and wasn't going to use it, whilst he was talking to me there were so many flashes going off it was like a fire work display:eek:

I took my dslr into the gymnastics yesterday no problem, security had a look, and at both lenses, and said as long as they were less than 20cm long I was fine. There was tons of folks there with them. Hope this helps; don't miss the opportunity!

I know they are letting longer lenses in. They showed one of the Canadian gymnasts father with what looked like a Canon 1D model and a long L series lens on it.

Hi - has anyone actually been to the main stadium with decent gear? Off there tomorrow for the 100m and concerned if I bring a 200 lens I might get it and the camera confiscated with nowhere to store it / no option other than to forfeit my expensive seat if I want to take the gear back home (no reentry to park, etc...).

All very confusing for such a prestige event and not doing a great deal for a positive, welcoming image of the games / the city.

i went to the basketball on friday but left my dslr at home. was too afraid that it would be confiscated. however, saw people with 550D, 60D and big lenses in the venue (i saw at least one person with a 70-200 in the venue).

I saw saw several 'L' lenses, A guess, but I think they where 70-200 f/4. Numerous of the cheaper 70-300mm type lens being used during the athletics Saturday evening.
