RAW Conversion
 

Thanks to Wave01 on here, and his very helpful advice/link, I am now shooting in RAW for the very 1st time. What I want to know is, once I have converted my RAW files so they are DNG files, can I bin the RAW images? I have been in trouble off my son for my poor organisation of my images so he has got me to sort into project folders and within each project I can have a file for each stage of the image (RAW, DNG, TIFF, JPEG etc). But if I have the DNG image, do I still really need the RAW image too?

A DNG is another type of RAW file. It is Adobe's RAW file format. You will not need both.

I don't keep them, in fact they never get stored on my PC as CR2. I use Adobe bridge to import my photo's from camera and there is an option to convert to DNG on import which I ticked.

Well that was useful and interesting. As I can't use my Canon software on my old Mac Pro, guess I have no choice but to use DNG but thanks to the link above, I can see no reason why this will cause me a problem.

Go onto Canon's website and you should be able to download the Mac version of the software. :D

my power mac pro has an old processor that wont support my camera raw. itsgetting less and less what i can do now as i cant upload a newer version of flash player or other updates.

Not to rub salt into wounds but this highlights the importance of having a computer and software that can cope with the cameras out there. It's all well and good researching the next best camera to buy but can your computer cope? I'm guilty of this and my computer barely coped with raw files so I reverted to jpegs which was a backward step. Fortunately it wasn't long before I updated my system, but I hadn't really budgeted for it. FWIW

OK...I have taken lots of images today all as raw. I need to copy them from my memory card to my PC yet its saying this will take 7 hours! Surely this can't be right??

What way does everyone else do it?
