New lens suggestions
 

Hi all,
I've recently purchased a 600D and am loving it. I've still only got the kit 18-55 lens, but have ordered a 70-200 L f4 to play with, but I'm also on the lookout for a good wide angle and possible a macro lens to go with the kit.
Can you possibly suggest some good models for me please? I'd like to go Canon L series all the way, but will happily use anything that produces good results for sensible money. I shoot a variety of images from wildlife to landscapes and awkward work in old graveyards where railings can infringe on the part I need, hence wide angle to capture this. Many thanks.

There are wide variety of lenses out there. Most are good, a few are very good. The "L" series will spoil you for the rest though. :) I like the Canon EF-S 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS. It is my favorite all around lens. It isn't perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a good lens.

I have a 550D - and have been reading up about a possible next lens the last few days. Came across the 17-55ef-s. This is supposedly an L lens in terms of IQ, but non-L because of plastic barrel construction and non-weatherproofing as all L lenses are. The price certainly puts it up there. Seems like it it the best ef-s lens canon currently make.

If I were you, I would skip the 17-55 EF-S and look toward the 15-85mm EF-S f/3.5-5.6 IS USM UD. The range is far better and the build is really good and solid. I didn't think that any of the 17-55's came close to it. (If I am wrong, someone please let me know.) The difference in cost is there, I will grant you, but the quality and zoom range is also there.

The other thing is it is an EF-S lens which means it will not work on a full frame sensor such as the 5D, Canon I believe only produce L lenses for the EF range. The 70-200 F4L does not have weather seals although that still made th L category.

The 17-55 EF-S that the OP is talking about I presume is the F2.8 version this has a constant aperture of F2.8 across the entire zoom range and has superb image quality ,better than the 15-85 with less barrell distortion and chromatic aberrations. I agree the 15-85 is a great lens and is generally the lens I carry with me.

Must agree with Dave regarding the 17-55 f/2.8. It's a super lens with a constant f/2.8.
I use 'L' lenses with this one exception, however the cost is almost in the 'L' bracket.

For a macro lens it will be very difficult to beat the Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS macro.
My other lenses include the 100-400 L and the 70-200 f/2.8 L non IS.

My latest aquisition is a USB host cable + an App called DSLR controller (Canon only at the moment), this enables me to use my Android phone to almost fully control my 7D remotely. Definitely my best ever photographic related assessory.

Ah, thanks Dave, I didn't realize he was going for the 2.8. To be honest, I didn't even know there was a 2.8 version of this lens. Missed that somehow. :)
