Good Canon lens for Landscapes/Portraits?
 

Which Canon lens would be perfect for taking landscapes and portraits?

I have the [I]18-55mm f/3.5-5.6[/I] (Non IS) kit lens at the moment. I would like an IS lens because I think I'll improve on my photos if I had it.

Price can't be too much, unless I get it used but in very good condition.

I would be using the lens just about all the time.

You havent given a budget but look at a sigma 17-70os its really a good all rounder

To be honest I'm not sure about a budget. I might consider trading in my Sigma 10-20mm lens.

I'm only interested in Canon lenses.

I was looking at the 17-40mm f/4 lens. Would it be ideal for my 450D body?

if you are going canon then look at the efs15-85 but it is pricey, from there theres the 24-105 and 24-70, but again pricey

Taken off Canons website:-

Many EF lenses are equipped with a ring-type USM which allows full-time manual focus in AF mode. This means you can manually fine-tune focusing as soon as auto focus is complete, without having to switch to manual focusing mode. Full-time manual focusing on most compatible lenses uses a mechanical system for instant responsiveness.

With regards to the 15-85mm it is a cracking lens, it does suffer from Vignetting at the wide end but that is easily corrected in PP.

I've been watching a video review for it on Youtube and looking at photos on Flickr. It looks like a really good lens.
I might have to consider this.

Yes it's a lovely lens, feels better built than the standard kit lenses, quite heavy, and optically very good, it's on my camera body 90% of the time.
Some say it's the nearest thing to an L lens without being an L lens.
I've never been lucky enough to own or use an L lens so can't vouch for that, but I'm very happy with it, yes it does have some problems like chromatic abberations and distortion, but that's to be expected from any zoom lens, and is easily corrected or reduced in Lightroom, or Canon's DPP.

Can't see why it shouldn't suit your 450D. I've used it on a 30D and now my current 60D and balances nicely on both bodies.

I use the 15-85mm and find the image quality excellent, I don't know what type of portrait photography you want to shoot but if you have the budget I use the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM and it's awesome.
