What do you think?
What's good, what's bad, and what's your overall impression please?

Hi Steve
To be perfectly honest I need some kind of contexts to tell me what I am looking at , the shots of what look like a bronze sculpture is certainly a fantastic piece of art work but I have no idea what it is and the roof shot and ammo image don't tell me anything either . Some shots can stand alone with no explanation and still convoy a story or emotion , these need some help . Mark |
I think Mark makes a good point. It's difficult to grasp exactly what these photos are about.
But they are nicely exposed and full of detail. Just would benefit from some context. |
My immediate impression is of Atlantic convoys and the rescues that happened, I take it that is what the place is about some war memorial. The pictures of the sculptures are excellent and very graphic but the roof doesn't have a place in it, the shells need something to go with them possibly the gun rack they are in.

Thanks for the comments, you're right, I should have explained some more. These were all taken at Chatham Historic Dockyard. The roof is the interior of "The Big Space" which is a huge storage building - I just found the textures and shapes interesting. The 40mm rounds are in the loading rack of the Bofors gun on HMS Cavalier (a 1945 built destroyer) - point taken about the context (I plan on going back for more soon so I'll see if I can try something different with them.
The sculpture is the Destroyer Memorial, commemorating all RN destroyers and their crews from WW2 - it's a stunning piece of work and although I claim no connection to the RN and wasn't aware of the memorial before my visit I found it profoundly moving, hence the close-ups. Steve |
I agree with what's been stated. Technically the photos are well exposed and show plenty of detail. It would be good if the pictures themselves provided context and told the story rather than your text. I get an idea of what's going on but it's rather confusing especially with the ceiling photo. It may help if you had a wideshot to establish the scene and then go into the detailed shots, I understand that this isn't always possible.

tbh i think its quite clear what the ship is showing that its been hit and is being evacuated its a good picture to take as its an important part of history that needs to be passed down the generations. so many lives lost from all sides. my grandad was a gunner during ww2 he was 18 yr old when he was captured in calais in 1940 and saw the end of the war in a p.o.w camp until finally liberated

I don't agree andydo. The images do depict a shipwreck/disaster and sailors being rescued but they don't denote a time or a place; are they merchant sailors or Royal Navy? Am I to assume that it's the north Atlantic during WWII? It really depends what Steve wanted to convey with the photographs and not his subsequent explanation.

look at the headwear there is clearly a ww2 tin hat in 1 of the shots, that wouldnt be on a merchant navy ship |

The wideshot! Hopefully this shows a bit more clearly that the ship is military and is picking up survivors - perhaps showing this first would have helped. Steve |
