This Is Britain - editor's top 50 - YOUR VIEWS
Is any body else disappointed in seeing the editors choice for this category?
Surely this should not have been called "This Is Britain". More like "Boozey Britain" ? Your views please... |
Hi James,
I'm a particular fan of the This is Britain category myself - the majority of the images don't feature alcohol at all, in fact only 8 images from the 35 images feature alcohol, so in my opinion I don't think is an unfair proportion. Whether or not you agree with it, alcohol/drinking is a big part of British culture so it was inevitable that pictures displaying alcohol were going to end up in this category. What do others think? Amy |
Martin Parr certainly has a lot to answer for.
What a great showcase to put to the world - this is Britain drunken, flithy, litter strewn, damp. miserable. Yes, there are places where it's all this but there's so much more too. A thoroughly depressing set of pictures - with just a few exceptions. Were there any entries that showed a more positive side?? |

I know the number of booze related images are in the minority, but they stand out more then the rest, as the others, only IMO, are so weak. The woman feeding the swans?????!!!! But apart from the landscape category, I find many of the images this year a bit underwhelming compared to last years. The booze ones, in the main, seem to be taken by someone with a mobile phone on a night out, hardly ground breaking. But only an opinion, not starting a massive row. |
Brilliant on the views.
Please keep them coming in, as i am very interested in what you all think. |
Boozy Britain may be a 'minority thing,' but you cannot help being confronted by it. It is big, and very much in your face in town and city centres all over the country. Sad but true. And we don't have to worry about the impression we make on other countries: they know. The pictures of the Sheffield Hallam student relieving himself over the poppies on the war memorial, have been flashed all over the world.
If it is any comfort, other countries are following our lead. In Holland people are very worried about the phenomenon of 'coma boozing.' A literal translation of the Dutch expression, but it is clear what is meant. |

Amy[/QUOTE] I disagree with you comments. It's only appears to be a big part because the media keep broadcasting it on TV and in the newpapers and gives the impression this is all we do at the weekend. |
