Nice shots!

What kind of sensor does this phone use Cathus , these images look as detailed as any shot taken on my D90 and going on what you said earlier about buying stick on lenses from ebay for a few quid for it it really does beg the question why aren't DSLR images alot better than an image taken on a phone .

I don't know what sensor the iPhone 4S has, it is slightly smaller than a normal compact camera sensor around 1/3 inch, the whole camera module in the iphone is about 9mm square by 6mm deep and offers an 8mp resolution.

The quality really is outstanding and not just for such a compact sensor they would be really good for a DSLR . I don't know enough about how images are formed so I'm not sure how much is down to the hardware and how much is down to the software but I still can't understand why a larger sensor inside a dedicated camera body with hundreds of pounds of glass in front of it doesn't produce markedly better images than something the size of a bean .

I think the iPhone has come along way, certainly since I was using my 3G.

To be honest, I'm surprised my recent postings of iPhone photos haven't generated more conversation about what iPhones and camera phones can add to the photographic genre.

I'm pretty impressed by the results I'm getting from a phone, certainly when compared to other images generated for website viewing. (large printing might be another matter, but I've not printed out many really)

To be honest I feel a bit cheated after spending hundreds / thousands of pounds on camera equipment when a phone can deliver images of this quality .

If your iphone can generate images like these are the camera company's pulling a fast one by charging thousands of pounds for equipment to do a job that can be done just as well by a phone ?

Not really. There's a big advantage gained by reducing the image for web viewing, effectively oversampling, so that the difference between a dSLR and a mobile phone is reduced. Take an image the other way and enlarge and you'll immediately notice the difference. Plus a dSLR will handle poor lighting with far less noise, as well as having a much greater dynamic range. And that's without even considering the optics! The new Nokia mobile with it's 41MP sensor takes advantage of this oversampling advantage to produce what look like amazing images @ 5MP or 8MP!

Amazing detail in the frog. Its tempted me to move up from the Iphone 4 to the 4s! :-)

I went from the 3S to the 4S so the jump was very noticeable. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
