shoot after dark.

Hello all. I am reading in the December 2011 issue the article "shutter speed effects" and I have a quick question. On page 46 there is a yellow box entitled "star trails: the settings you'll need" and a technique is described where multiple shots are taken including a final shot using the same settings with the lens cap on to reduce noise in the final image. However there is no mention of processing these shots to produce this final image. I would love a bit of follow up on this if anyone can help me out since I have developed a bit of a habit for nightscape shooting. Thanks!

You can either merge the images manually in photoshop or similar or I have used this applications with good results:-
