Model compensation. What is it?

Thought I might make a new thread instead carrying on from my other thread.

Some of you will know that I'm wanting to get involved in portrait photography.
I've looked at ModelMayhem website and it says 'compensation' on peoples' profiles.

Can someone please tell me what it means?

I'm writing a profile up to put on maybe both VivaStreet and Gumtree websites.

Not looking into it, but i assume its most lieky they want something for thier trouble, either money for expenses or Prints or images, that way both you and the model get something, I think, im sorta assuming this but it seems likely.

Hope its all going well for you aswell.

Dan is right, its just you compensating them for their time. Maybe paying their travel expenses or coming to some other arrangement like giving them prints, a cd of their images. Look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_for_print

Thank you for the replies. If there's anything else I should know, then please let me know as it will be much appreciated.

I'll have to change my profile because I wrote "You do not have to pay me as I'm a beginner, but I'm always open to negotiation."

Thank you Dan. I'm only just writing a profile up at the moment. Then I'll add it on either of the two websites I mentioned.

For the profile I've wrote the following. I would like some advice on if its ok.

"I'm a 27yr old caring guy from Keighley who is looking for beginner, amateur and professional models to help me start my career in Portrait Photography. I'm interested in female glamour, full and upper body and semi-nude (with something covering yourself up).. I would like to take your photos indoors maybe in your home (to make you feel safe and secure) or outdoors depending on the weather.

I do not have any 'studio lighting' or backdrops so I will be using natural light.

After the photo shoot and after I process the photos at home, I'll be happy for you to provide feedback on the photos I have taken. I will put the photos on a CD for free when I've finished with them.

You do not have to pay me as I'm a beginner, but I'm always open to negotiation. <----Changing this

I will travel up to 15-20 miles depending on where you live.

If your interested please contact me."

It sounds a bit like a GWC's profile to me. It really doesn't matter much what you put in here, anyway; models are not going to beat a path to your door until you have some good pictures in your portfolio. You're going to have to go to them, to persuade them that you can take pictures which will benefit their portfolio, or you can give them money.

Just before Christmas, The Model Experience in Leeds had a Groupon offer where you could join one of their sessions on a Saturday. It sounds a bit quirky. Rather than being all set up with standard poses, the models are instructed not to strike poses unless and until you direct them. Seems like a baptism of fire, but should sort out whether one can do the job or not.

If it was my profile I'd leave out the "looking for beginner, amateur and professional models" and just put 'looking for models'

I'd leave out "I do not have any 'studio lighting' or backdrops so" and just say 'I prefer to use natural light only' - you don't want to emphasise negative aspects of what you don't have rather emphasise what you do.

I'd leave out the "After the photo shoot and after I process the photos at home," paragraph and just say you're happy to work on the 'time for CD basis' as this term is clearly understood and how and wherev you process your shots is not important.

I'd leave out "You do not have to pay me as I'm a beginner, but " completely, you are unlikely to be approached by people wanting to pay you as you have no history, you're more likely to have to pay someone to help you. Again, don't emphasise the negative aspect (I'm a beginner)

I'd leave out 'depending on where you live' as it's unnecessary, just say you can travel up to 20 miles.

it's if 'you're' interested, not 'your interested'.

Thank you Cathus for your input. I've changed the profile.

I've known a TOP model photographer for more than a few months. We exchanged emails this evening and she told me to stop before I post anything. She's going to try and get me some contacts (models) for me to photography.

Happy Now :D
