canon 24-70 f2.8 L problem advice needed.
 

Hey peeps

Not long got a canon 24-70 f2.8 L and sold a shed load to buy it...(Not new)

I've been using the lens with no hassle...a superb lens I must say.

Today I ran into a problem which I think could be major...:(

When using the lens it autofocuses fine,zooms fine,ect at f2.8 you press the shutter and it does as it should..as soon as I move the aperture to anything higher than f2.8 it focuses ect but when you press the shutter button to take the shot an error 01 message appears.I've cleaned the contacts no joy...this doesn't happen on any other lenses..I'm thinking its something to do with whatever controls the aperture. Is there a ribbon that may be snagged or is my lens had it?

Please advise I'm devastated....:(

Sorry to hear that, it sounds like an issue with the aperture module if that is the only lens that does it.

Saddly sounds like it needs to go off for repair, you may want to contact [url=http://www.hlehmann.co.uk/4.html]these[/url] people I have found them to be really good in the past.

Lots of discussion via Google on the problem, if cleaning the contacts on the lens and camera don't fix it then you probably need to send it for repair.

Quite a few people with that problem seem to have had the IS module replaced in the lens, but I only did 2 minutes looking, if you spend a bit more time you might be able to narrow down the problem a bit more.

Hey gents thanks for your advice so far..what is the aperture module? I don't think it could be anything to do with IS as it is a non-IS lens,however when I think back to just before the error occured when I zoomed the lens from 28mm to 24mm it felt like there was a bit of resistance and a bit stiff.when I looked through the viewfinder just before focusing almost all my focus points were illuminated? I actually just thought about that there when I was thinking if there couldve been anything I had done..

Yup, a "Communication error between lens and camera" and from your description, as suggested above, the aperture module. There is a small motor which engages a cogged ring to alter the aperture when the shutter is released - could be the motor, the cogs have become stripped or the aperture blades sticking

Thanks for your communication guys,Ive since spoken to my local repair guys who have told me that it sounds likeley to be aperture flex cable and iris assembly...they advised that the lenses very rarley go but when they do it always seems to be that...So im going to hand it in to them later on today....and itll be with me in a few weeks.....so itll be a waiting game to get my lens back..

Hope you get it sorted soon and can start enjoying the lens once again.

I had the same with my now ex 24-105L, Error 01 and could only use the 24mm end. It was the dreaded diaphragm problem and needed replacement. Sods law you got it after buying it, and probably not the sellers fault. It is a fairly expensive fix but not as expensive as a new lens. I had mine fixed and the lens was returned as new. Canon also cleaned all the inner optics and tightened the barrel which had a minor creep to it. It's worth doing.

Hey Guys thanks for all your advice ,Ive since had my lens repaired and back good as new,replaced the diaphragm assembly and zoom guides,and basically returned by lens to factory spec...it now has a nice stiff and smooth zoom,and focus ring is smooth to operate im glad it happened earlier than later and the glass is crystal clear....i got the lens extremley cheap so it was no loss paying to have it repaired.....now time to get a few proper shots as ive hardly used it.....!
