Lens for Canon 5D

HI,

I am looking to buy a second hand 5D and then the following new lenses 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8.

I am upgrading from a Canon 300d and wondered if the 24 - 70 would be wide enough as my current kit lens i the 18-55 but I cannot see an equivalent.

Other questions:

Do i really need image stabilisation with the 24-70 or not?

What size filter do I look for to protect the lens?

Thanks
Jaime

Yes this would be an ideal general use lens. I personally can't see the point in stabilization on a f2.8 and this focal range. As specially with the 5d's high iso performance. Others may disagree.

I have the Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 and it's a cracking lens, so if the Canon version is as good as that then it sould be fine. I sometines use my 24-70mm at 24mm for wide angle shots instead of my 14-24mm. :D

I've the 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS (on 7D) and find it perfect most of the time.......... but borrow OH's IS version (when you need it, you need it!). But then I rarely stray off ISO100 (though I've usefully gone to 3200 with no real probs - on a 7D)

Depends if he is looking to buy a 2nd hand 5D mk 1 or 2 I guess also if I had the money then I would go for the IS version purely on the superior optics as the non IS has not been revised but saddly I don`t:(

I believe David Noton uses that 24mm lens, so it should be wide enough!

24-70 will pump dirt into you camera body whenever you zoom.
take one and put the open end that mounts to the camera and hold it up to your face near your eye and zoom it and feel the air it moves since its nota internal zoom design.
I got rid of mine because I got tired of cleaning the sensor all the time.
the series 2 that is coming out in this model will hopefully fix this.
