Hi, my computer had to be rebuilt. I am now trying to open catalogues that have not changed location (they were on a separate drive) but lightroom tells me that the images are missing! The only thing that has changed is my version of lightroom which was upgraded from 1 to 2. Any ideas how to open the catalogues successfully again.
Might have to re-import them into Lightroom as the file that Lightroom uses to know where the pictures are was on your C drive. This is why you should backup this files as well. :)
I'm note entirely sure what you are saying here. On the one hand you are implying that you are unable to open the catalogue in which case no images would be shown let alone shown as missing, but on the other hand you are saying that the images are missing implying that nothing is being shown. Um - I'll try to give you two possibilities:
(a) if memory serves me correctly (and we're going back a while now) version 1 of LR had a catalogue file ending in the suffix .lrdat whilst the newer versions of LT (v 2xx) use a prefix of .lrcat. For users who upgraded in situ, the catalogue was automatically converted upon installation. Due to the fact that you executed a computer rebuild prior to upgrading it might well be that LR doesn't recognise at this stage the new catalogue prefix. Now the big question - did you backup the old catalogue (.lrdat) file prior to the rebuild and, more importantly, did you locate it somewhere other than on the computer that you intended to rebuild? If you haven't got a backup of that .lrdat file then there is nothing you can do other than to start again from scratch with a new catalogue. Your images of course will still be there, on the other drive (EHD ?? ) as you mentioned but any edits that you made will be lost.
(b) If you have got a backup of the .lrdat file file (or indeed the original on another drive as implied) then you might want to try this. Locate the .lrdat file on the other drive and then double-click on it (LR should not be running at this point). Once the .lrdat file is double-clicked LR should open giving you the message that the catalogue (.lrdat) file needs to be converted. Follow the on-screen instructions and you should be good to go. Also, if this works don't forget in Preferences to tell LR always to use this catalogue.
(c) If you have got this far already but LR is showing the images as missing (a small question mark top right of every image) then it could be the case that upon rebuild of the computer the other drive containing your images has had it's drive letter association changed e.g. from K to L. You might want to check this first. If not, and the images are exactly where they were and the drive letter has not been changed then try this. In the left hand panel of the Library right click on the top parent folder and choose the option 'update folder location' followed by pointing LR in the direction of where this folder is located on the drive. The sub folders should at this point fall automatically into line.
Get back if this advice proves to be helpful or if you have any further questions.
