Sunrise Over Roker Pier

Early rising this morning gave me the opportunity of a stunning sunrise...but have I captured it?

I think your composition is spot on Chris. The elements in the photo lead the eye around the scene with ease. The only thing I would have a look at is the horizon. Could be easily strIghtened just by a little nudge clockwise.

Great photo.

Thanks Paul, I know you feelings on wonky horizons!!! I took this with the grid lines on (which I normally don't do) so I'm surprised it's not straight but then again, my eyes are dodgy so who knows what they were seeing!!!! And how right you were, have checked it and adjusted it. Nothing gets past you! lol

Thought at 1st it was a little dark, but when I tried to lighten it, the sky was blown out a little.

It's a great image. Do you now shoot in raw? If you do the 'recovery' slider helps bring back any blown highlights.

DigiDiva 20-09-11 12:14 PM

I can't shoot in RAW Paul, wish I could. As you may know, I only have a netbook, so no cd/dvd drive to download the software that came with the camera. I don't have the memory for photoshop and the free PP programmes I use don't support RAW.

I'm struggling to improve now, with the limits to my camera, the resolution and size of the netbook screen and lack of decent PP programmes. It's getting more and more frustrating and having a negative effect on my photography.

Thanks for the nice comments about my shot. Alas, excuses don't make great photos so I just have to make the most of what I have.

It's a good shot Chris, though you could crop or clone out the vertical black object running along the right hand side of the shot?

The colours seem a tiny bit flat though, and perhaps miss some of the contrast and saturation that you no doubt saw with your own eyes?

Thanks Matt, can you advise me on boosting the colours? As above, my PP programmes are limited so it will have to be kept simple. Any advice on improving is much, much appreciated. Have tried saturation, hue, contrast but any other advice is appreciated.

And if my photos are rubbish, please tell me (nicely..lol)

They're not rubbish at all, don't be silly.

Just open the file in Camera RAW and tweak up the saturation and the contrast. Be careful not to over-do it though! Less is more :)
