(I wanted to say hi, but couldnt find an obvious forum to use for it - so sorry if it's not in the right place.)

I've just plumped up the readies for a new Nikon D90, bought at the airport on the way to Prague.

Hopefully this is my first step on the road to becoming a fairly decent photographer.

No doubt I'll likely be pestering everyone with questions relating to technique, etc (I've been reading the Digital Camera mag over the past year, on and off).

It was shot on full auto, and the jpg is the unprocessed jpg produced by the camera (although I do have the RAW file, so once I am more happy working with the raw's, I can play around with the file to see what I can do to improve on it).

It does just show what the difference in quality is going from a basic compact, up to a dSLR. I'm no expert by any means, but the quality of images changed immediately on buying the camera!

hey there and welcome to the forum.. There are lots of people on here willing to help if you need guidance etc. Really like your shot - great detail. At first I read that you have taken this shot in the airport and was wondering ... what the ...?

Cheers both of you. I'm sure there is more I could do post-production to the photo, but I dont have much experience yet, so I'm as like to make it look worse.

Great shot, but I'm puzzled. With all the great subjects in Prague you chose this one to share with us:confused:

I have more (I filled a 16GB card - pared down to about 400 shots from 900 odd), but a lot of them were very... touristy/amateurish. Having only just picked up the SLR, and having nothing but the camera, kit lens, and a basic understanding of using it, I don't think I did the city much justice. A great deal of the shots are the kind you can imagine sitting through during someones slide show - great for the person who took them, but of little value to others. There may well be some more gems in there though.

I may well add more once I go through them a bit more. But I think that almost all of them will require some post-production to look good, whereas this one looks (in my mind) pretty good just as is.

Firstly if you dont mind me saying, it's not the camera that makes a good photographer(although it helps, especially in my case and if that was so I would buy the most expensive one i could afford and maybe take shots Ansel Adams would envey....lol), some people just have the nack for it and have a natural talent/eye. If you don't mind me saying, I think that you have that and most probably in bucket loads.........

Thank you. I think I was lucky with this shot to be honest. Right place, right time. Although I suppose that is a lot of what good Photography is about.

It seems like the latest edition of DCM is aimed right at me (it must be a sign!) - Guides on landscape photography, sub £100 equipment, and a RAW guide! I'll be devouring the details in there I think, in an effort to bring my technique up.

I, for one would like to see some of them. I was there on business a few years back and couldn't take my bulky DSLR kit so I bought a Canon 'point & shoot' for the trip. When I got back discovered that it was faulty and I had less than a dozen shots recorded. Bit cross:mad:
