Time Lapse Ideas - London

Hi All,

I am planning a time lapse movie that I am going to shoot in New York when I go over there in May. In the mean-time I want to get some more practice shooting video on the 60D and editing it in iMovie.

My plan is to do a London time lapse over the next month or so. I do visit London that much and am struggling for ideas. The London Eye seems obvious and people/traffic around pica dilly circus.

I have been told its illegal to film in underground stations without a permit else that would have looked pretty cool.

Has anyone got a idea of London locations that would work in a time lapse movie.

Thanks,

Dave

Hmm, maybe outside a station? Lots of people coming and going. Or by a bridge so you get the reflections and boats? Depends what style you're going for really

Go for the Lesser Known tourist spots, be good to see different parts of london... Try and See if you can film in Billingsgate fish market, Great place to go, be a good little bit of a Time lapse i think, and anywhre by night time that looks at the Streets,

Hi Dave,

Who told you it was illegal to film in a London Underground Station? It isn't illegal, it is however, private property and you need the owners permission to film. This is not difficult to obtain, but again, there's another hurdle to overcome. If anyone (and I mean anyone) asks you to not film them, or asks you to delete any images you may have taken of them you must comply. On the plus side, hundreds of people photograph tube trains in and around stations every day and a blind eye is turned. Personally, I must have shot trains running in and out of stations a hundred times and it's never been a problem.

The rules are a bit flexible, and the Police have been told in no uncertain terms that everyone with a camera is not a terrorist. So, as long as you're on public property you can shoot whatever you like. Anyone on the same public property is fair game, however, the same rules apply; If they ask you to delete etc. If you wish to film in or on private property you must obtain the owners permission.

Most of the issues can be resolved very simply. If you walk into Barclays Bank and start filming you're very likely be told to stop and be slung out. But, if you approach the Security desk and explain that you want to film the company logo and the best vantage point is the company canteen, as long as you smile and you're reasonable they will probably escort you wherever you want to go.

This website states you need a permit to film/photograph on the London underground:
