choices

right people i have a choice of camera for xmas between the nikon d3100 with a 18-55mm lens or a canon eos 1000d with the same size lens what are your recommendations (i know there will be a difference of opinoin so if you put down pros and cons aswell it would be a great help)

I think this the wrong place to pose such a question.
Most of the people on the forum will not own both of these cameras and will only be able to advise based on their own experiences with one of them, or even just a brand.
People tend to be cast in a mould or Nikon or Canon and will argue furiously in favour of one against the other.
In issue 114 of Digital Camera Matthew Richards pitted the Nikon D3100 against the Canon EOS 1100D and came out in favour of the Nikon although it has to be said that this appears to be based on features rather than quality of image and, at the end of the day, that's what we're looking for. On that front they look pretty equal.
So, if you're strapped for cash and can't manage the extra £30 for the Nikon, then go for the Canon.

Trouble is Andy, most Nikon owners won't have used the Canon and most Canon owners won't have used the Nikon. You've quite rightly premeditated that brand loyalty may give you a biased opinion, so where does that leave you?

The best advice I can give is for you to handle the goods. If that means trying them out in a second hand high street store then do so. It may seem cheeky, but you are a potential customer and should be expected to want to "try before you buy".

Have either of the two lenses got IS? I know the later Canon version does, but that may not be the version that comes with the 1000D. As far as I know both of those camera combinations are a great start for you in Digital SLR photography. The only other thing to consider is future accessory and lens purchases. Do you have any friends or family that have a Nikon or Canon DSLR and who may be upgrading lenses etc in the future. If so, and you're still undecided which camera make you prefer, this may sway your choice.

All the best in your final choice,

Rick.

Edit:
Chris (jet kit) beat me to it in his reply, but I suppose it may help you to hear we're both singing from the same hymn sheet.

What are you using now? If you already have lens then stick to that brand.

Hi Andy, just to repeat what some of the other members have said. Nikon and Canon are both the leading brands on the market but, they are not the only brands out there. Different people will swear by different cameras and brands and what they like in a camera might not be to your taste. The beat advice that I, or anybdy else can give you is, for you to go down to your local camera store like Jessops and try a few cameras out. Yes, they do let you have a play around with them all be it while still in the store, but at least that way you will get a feel for what you like and what you don't like.........
