I would appreciate your comments on this close up of some Fungi, including the name of the Fungi if anyone knows it!

It appears that, with the narrow depth of field, the foreground twigs are sharp but not the 'caps'. If you're sticking with auto-focus I think you have to get the caps in sharp focus, half press the shutter (to lock focus) then re-compose. If using manual focus (recommended for close-ups) you should be able to do the same but without the focus lock.

This is something I obviously need to work on. I think, in this shot, I used manual focus. I focused the shot, and using live view I used the x5 and x10 to zoom into one point (the centre of the front cup) and ensured it was in focus, then I took the shot. Is there somethething else I should have done? Not saure I understand about the re-focussing. Can someone explain?

Chris, I like the composition and the exposure is spot on. The only improvement you could have made to it was to use a slightly wider depth of field, because as Geoff has already pointed out, only the caps right at the front of this clump/group/clutch (whatever the correct term is) are in sharp focus and the ones further away aren't. Do you have a depth of field preview button on your camera or a function button you can program to do this? If so, make good use of it when doing macro work. I find it invaluable when I do any macro shots, because there are times when you have to keep reducing the size of your aperture to be able to get the correct depth of field, often having to compensate by increasing the ISO to keep the shutter speed at a reasonable level to counter any movement of your subject.

Another teeny weeky little tip on this one Chris. I think that you could have done with some tin foil or something there just to reflect a little bit of light back up under the mushroom to lighten the fins underneath a little. Notwithstanding that it is still a great pic.

HAHA sorry I didnt take tinfoil with me that day. I was looking for pond life pics (frogs mostly but they were hiding..lol) and just stumbled upon the mushrooms. If I hadn't been loosing weight, Iwould have had a kit kat wrapper in my pocket lolbut alas...noluck there.

I have a massive gap in my lighting knowledge so hopefully I will learn this when I start college next Monday.

Only on the bottom right 'hood' of the fungi part of a twig has been edited out??

It looks Pretty good Chris, the others have highlighted some good points, wich im sure youll be able to improve again,

Drew i just spoted that, it looks like it has imo,

also cris there is some Green Fringing on the top when you look at close, just to point it out,

I tried to edit out the whole twig, but it looked silly. Thought I had 'undone' it all but oops, I missed undoing a bit. Darn it!
