Bought anything from DigitalRev.com ??

Are they any good?

I'm thinking about buying the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM from them because its the cheapest place I can find the lens.

Unless someone knows somewhere I can buy it cheaper, please let me know.

For me, B&H shows a lower price (both sites can adjust price for local currency)

Why bother? DigitalRev is Hong Kong, you will have to pay VAT on delivery plus courier will charge you another £15 fee for collecting VAT. B&H is $709 delivered after taxes which is £430 you can get it cheaper in the UK

I've bought quite a bit of stuff via Hong Kong and have saved hundreds even with VAT & import duty.

I recently bought 3 of the new pocket wizards and saved around £200 and got charged import & VAT on them. I saved almost £300 on a 50-500 a few years ago. I bought my light meter for £79 when the UK price was £180.

I've probably bought 4 lenses and loads of other stuff and have never saved less than around £50 on UK prices (that's kind of my cut off point for whether it is work the risk of importing over domestic buying)

If you factor in the extra charges and can still save money then the only thing you have to worry about is what kind of warranty you get and whether you will need to return it to Hong Kong or not for the repair, in which case that could swallow up any savings you make.

No idea on how your current choice of lens stacks up for savings.

Digital Rev are sellers on ebay UK, and have a UK agent and UK phone number. I've just looked at one of their ebay listings, and it looks like they've put a lot of effort in to showing themselves as a viable supplier to the UK. I'd be tempted to give them a go personally, but that's just me :)

EDIT - Second thoughts, I read in their small print that they're not responsible for import tax costs. I then went here: http://www.dutycalculator.com and calculated the tax if I were to be hit with it, and got this:

Total customs value: £1000.00
- Duty: £67.00
- VAT: £213.40
Total import duty & taxes due: £280.40
Total landed cost: £1280.40

Harsh :\

Digital Rev 2x Pocket Wizard Flex & Pocket Wizard Mini, free postage £403.

Using the calculator above - Duty £12, VAT £83, total £499

WarehouseExpress £577 plus postage.

£80 in your pocket to buy something else

You might not make such great savings on other things but it's worth condsidering. I've used Digital Rev and other Hong Kong eBay outfits lots of times and never had a bad experience. I note that lots of things are more expensive at the moment at Digital Rev. (I've never had to return anything but I know with Sigma lenses they will only repair them in the UK under warranty if you have proof you paid the (import) VAT.
When I got my 50-500mm lens it arrived in 28 hours from time of order, you can't get that from a lot of UK retailers.

(also due to the vagaries of the tax collecting system you don't always get charged import tax or VAT, but that's a matter for your own conscience)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Just been looking on the Internet for one hour and I've found a website selling one at £344. Just tweeted a tweet on Twitter asking @Gavin_Hoey and @TipSquirrel where I can find one cheaper than £400.

You must be mad digital rev £315 once you add duty and tax its £405. Then you will charged another £15 form DHL or whoever they use. £420 You will have to wait a week at least to get it. You don't get a manufacturers warrenty just a Digitalrev one so you will have to send it back to them. There £350-£370 on Amazon shipped from the UK.

thefonz

I tried to order something on Amazon two months ago but the website wouldn't accept my card, so I gave up. So I won't be buying anything from there, unless I try to sort it out.

thefonz78 25-08-11 08:04 PM
