Log In via the main forum
 

So, I want to reply to a thread, but the forum decides that I've been away far too long (may be minutes, hours or days; seems to be an uncertain amount of time) so I 'login via the main site' and then if I really want to post what I wanted to post I need to find the place to post that again... why can't I log on where I was, and go back to that place? It seems to be set up for a forum where everyone posts frequently, and that's not the case. It encourages folks to post less frequently, because I can't now remember what I logged on to reply to, much less be bothered to find it.

why don't you just log in from the thread you are looking at, do you not get the login box on the right?, it should then return you to wherever you were when you logged in.

If I'm not logged in I can see the login box where your Welcome box & avatar photo are within the forums

Yes, I can do that... but the box that pops up over the thread that I want to reply to doesn't do that, and doesn't tell me that I might prefer to do that.

Is this a browser problem?

I don't think so. There's two different redirects going on here. The main login on the right hand side of the page (when reading a thread) will take you back to the thread you reading after login.

The login link from the popup (when reading a thread) will take you to your profile page.
