Well after reading your article, I can't say that I'm really sold on the idea upgrading to one because Olympus haven't really pushed the boat out enough to make it seem worthwhile. It seems very clear that they are focusing on the mirrorless technology and choosing not to invest in the development of their SLRs. Is this because Canon and Nikon have virtually sewn up this area of the market, though the likes of Sony and Pentax are still looking to increase their respective market shares, so don't Olympus think it's worth doing the same. Do they feel they can not compete at this level and that the camera buying public and professionals do not take their DSLRs seriously? I suppose the media are also of the same opinion, hence they feel they're wasting both theirs and everybody else's time.

I think if they thought they had a future in this sector of the market they would have produced something more radical, that gave them a serious competitive edge in this marketplace. The E-5 may well be the end of the line for Olympus cameras with a mirror and perhaps in the next couple of years we will see that radical departure and once more they will light up the world of digital cameras and everyone else will be playing catch up!

Canon and Nikon are certainly the clear leaders in the DSLR market and that is a large part of why othe rmanufacturers, including Olympus, have started to bring out new mirrorless compact system cameras.

I think there could be something a bit more radical from Olympus in the future, maybe next year. I hope the engineers and deigners take a look at some other camera menu systems for the next model.

Judging by the response (or lack of) to this thread Angela it seems the answer is no. Hardly surprising at that price. Nevertheless, your review is appreciated.

As this is a general photographic forum I wonder why posts in Olympus Chat and Panasonic Chat are so infrequent compared with other brand-specific Chats?

Nice idea but more likely to switch brands from Olympus to Canon/Nikon/Pentax(?) - my choice of my E-510 seems rash and restictive too.

Because there are fewer Four Thirds users generally, let alone here?

You may well be right VSS, but its not what Olympus and Panasonic would have us believe if you include micro-FourThirds. Certainly there seems to be limited interest on this forum, particularly in Panasonic.

I really like my E-510 and the E-5 does appeal, but at the current price I do wonder, especially when compared to the Nikon D7000. Lens choice is restricted, and Sigma are cutting their Four Thirds range. That will leave the choice to Olympus only lenses, often pushing up the price again when compared to the alternatives.

Olympus need to decide whether the four thirds format (not the micro four thirds) is dead. If not, innovate and captivate the loyal, as well as the market. Otherwise users will move away. Shame.

I started off with an E-1, and whilst it got 'slagged-off' a lot by people - who thought the Mp count was too low, (Often by people who had never even used one!) or too expensive for the no of Mps, I found it an excellent camera and some of my images really 'hacked-off' Canon and Nikon APS-C users when I bought in 2006 the 7-14mm zoom; I think they are still waiting for a comparable optic (114 degrees across the frame - not diagonally, which is 'Cheating'!) I bought an E3 soon after it appeared, but still have and use the E-1 because it's a lot less obtrusive. Tempted to go for the E5, but I don't need video (dabbled with video some years ago and it's just not my 'thing') so I suppose I will wait until a newer version appears.
The only niggles i have with the E3 are the DOF button which doesn't sit high enough the body (but have found a way of solving that!) and the On/Off button, which feels to me as if it operates the wrong way round, have a more pronounced size and could be better positioned. The ultrasonic 'dust-busting' system is superb, still haven't had any dust on the E1 or E3's sensors or viewfinder screens, even though I've changed optics in some pretty risky places.What puzzles me, is why is it that while the image quality of the m4/3rds cameras is highly regarded, an yet it's 4/3rds sibling, isn't admired as much? It is after all, nigh-on the same sensor!

I have to say this is the way I am going –*it is just not serious any more to continue with Olympus and I have to say that this makes me sad.
