How unique is unique?
 

I have never been on a photo safari and had not realised the dangers. Not so much those posed by wildlife, but the risk of ending up with a unique picture that has also been snapped by someone else.

I believe it's the same photograph, differently cropped - it's certainly the same photographer anyway.

Its the same photograph without a doubt. The only difference is that one has been cropped. Is that what you think tioo, Reinardina? I don't think its a different photograph by two different photographers, although I could be wrong of course.

It's either that or someone with the same family name sitting in the exact same spot when they took the photograph ;-)

Stunning photograph though, easy to see why they picked it at WPOTY - but I have to say I kinda prefer the crop in our competition. I know it's closer in on the action, but I liked the wide angle - just my opinion of course.

I was down at the WPOTY exhibition yesterday to meet the winners - truly inspirational. The overall winner, Bence, who also won the Eric Hosking Award is great - he camps in hides which he designs himself with one way glass etc. Now there's someone who's dedicated...

There'll be a video on site soon with his comments, along with the young winner (who is also fantastic - not only brilliant at photography but also so eloquent, charming and humble), head judge Mark Carwardine and a couple of other category winners/highly commendeds.

I actually dug out the newspaper with the Veolia photo, and compared it with the enlarged picture on this site. It then becomes obvious there's only a split second difference between the two pictures.
Superb shot, I'm really jalous! However, neither my eyesight, nor my simple camera would be up to the job.

Karen, wouldn't it be nice if your niece could secure you your university place? (If tuition fees haven't gone through the roof by then!) Good luck!

The photo is amazing and its really good that the photographer never panicked and blurred it! I am sure I would have. I don't envy wildlife photographers, you have to have patience, be up half the night sometimes and nerves of steel.

I was talking about that to my husband last night as I'm putting off the application for another 2yrs! Its too expensive. I doubt I'll get further in the competion but yeah it would be life changing and I'd been in Newport this time next year :-). I am going to do another Btech in my local college, that will talke me 2yrs, in Media production.

If you're ever in Cardiff Karen you could try some of the one day courses they do at Ffotogallery in Penarth, be a good way to get in with the local photography "crowd" as well... and the courses are usually pretty cheap I think.

Does Newport not offer any kind of bursaries that can be applied for?

Thanks, Amy I will have a look at that. I could get a bursary of £1000 from Newport which is helpful. Problem I have is the accomodation in Newport. I can't get student accomodation as my husband and two dogs would be coming with me so we'd need a house. Been looking at some of the prices and they're 300-600 a month!
I am in North Wales so travelling every day isnt an option either. I'm sure I will get there eventually.
