Running out of memory
 

I have loaded photoshop elements on to my Laptop. Can I now dispose of Windows photo browser and Canons zoom browser ex plus epson file manager from my computer, because of these programmes each automaticaly saves a copy of my photos. And just run Photo shop. Freeing up memory?

Removing the programs will only free up memory if they are continuously running in the background, otherwise they will only free up a bit of hardrive space. You can probably set each program to run manually, rather than have them automatically copy pictures from your camera to the PC.

Just hard drive space. I know a lot of people refer to it as memory.

As the others have said, you're talking about storage space (or hard drive space) not "memory" as such. Memory usually describes the RAM, or thinking space (rather than the storage space) of the computer. Removing programs will give you back the storage space they take up but won't directly affect your computers thinking space (this is only used when you actually run the program).

In answer to your question though, you could remove all the other programs apart from Windows photo browser, which you're stuck with as it's part of Windows itself. As mentioned above, you can also set them so that they don't automatically download your photos. My advice is that if you don't use them, uninstall them (same goes for all software in my book!).

Freeing space wont necessarily make your laptop perform faster,by all means take all the editing programs that you wont need off the laptop,depending on how much RAM you have already best advice i can give is upgrade your ram,I upgraded recently from 2gb to 4gb of RAM and what a massive difference it has made to my laptop..Hope this helps..:)

I recently upgraded the RAM in my PC from 4GB to 8GB of DDR3 and the improvement has been very noticeable.

I Had a nightmare tracking the other 4GB down as its no longer in production. I eventually found some on eBay.de (Germany) of all places. Then I had a nightmare paying the guy as he didn't take paypal (didn't spot it at the time), so had to do an IBAN transfer lol. Got there in the end though and computer is running much quicker and smoother since.

You must be running a 64bit system, because with a 32bit system the maximum RAM the processor can manage is 4GB. So check your pcs specs carefully to see what the maximum amount of RAM it can take.

You're right Ian. I am running Vista 64bit.

The other thing to do if laptop is slow is go in to the settings on photoshop and set up the memory allocation for the programme.
