Trouble importing RAW to CS3? help please
 

I am a newbie with this stuff so be kind to me eh?;)
I cant bring CR2 images into my CS3 as a panel keeps popping up"not the right document "
So on doing some homework on this great site i have now uploaded the Adobe Camera Raw plug in 4.1.1.
It still not allow CR2 Raw images!!
First question.....how do i fix this ?

I then remembered that in GIMP i could save a Jpeg to RAW [psd ] so i gave that a try then opened CS3 > dragged and dropped the PSD.....IT OPENED !!!
Second Question: did i really import a RAW or was it a glorified Jpeg ? I couldnt tell in CS3 by looking....all i could see is the image was named PSD.
I need some counselling i think as i'm getting traumatised by this:D

Hi John,

You can't save a jpeg to a RAW file. PSD is not RAW. PSD is "PhotoShop Document". So to answer your second question:

No. You didn't open a RAW file. Or a jpeg. You converted a RAW file (.CR2) into a PSD file which would then open in CS3.

You've got 2 options. Firstly, we need to know what model of camera it is. Every single model of camera has a different RAW format and it might be that CS3 doesn't support your camera format. Adobe (in their wisdom) don't release updates beyond a certain point for old software so, if you have a newer model camera than CS3 can support, you won't be able to open the .CR2 files into CS3.

If it turns out that CS3 won't support your camera, you can still open your RAW files into it but you will need to convert them to Adobes own Digital Negative (.DNG) format. This [B]is [/B]a RAW format and the converter is free.

Sorry i knew i forgot to add the camera type after i posted....its a 50D Canon.....which i checked days ago and i am sure it was covered.
What now ?

Back to school for you then John and/or a [U][B]LOT[/B][/U] more homework. The ACR plug-in that supports the 50D is version 4.6 NOT 4.1 as you appear to have installed. ;)

Go here [URL]http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4036[/URL] , download the plug-in after reading very carefully where it should be installed.

Wrong plug-in eh....i definately need to do more homework as you so rightly suggest..

Back again!!!.......downloaded the 4.6 and followed the directions exactly. Ensured the download was in the File Formats and then the big test.......................... same old thing !! Somebody pass some Immodium to me quick !!:confused:

I tried dragging and dropping the CR2 image, copy and pasting, from Bridge, from Files/open in CS3, from card reader......i tried everything and evertime the same panel keeps appearing "not the right kind of document".


Why is this so ruddy difficult !!

Any guesses people ?

[U][B]Question 1[/B][/U]: the 50D has 3 RAW shooting modes (discounting RAW + JPEG) namely - RAW (CR2, 14 bit), sRAW1 (7.1MP) and sRAW2 (3.8MP) so can you please confirm which of these modes your camera is set to?

If set to either of the sRAW modes please shoot an image in full RAW mode, copy it to a temporary folder on your desktop then right click on the image and choose 'Open in Photoshop CS3". Forget Bridge at this point - the object is to see if you can open a CR2 using ACR. Does it open now? If yes, repeat with one of the sRAW modes and see if this opens. ACR began offering support for the sRAW format from version 4.2 I believe so if the plug-in is correctly installed it should be working. To check this, open CS3 go Help > About Plug-In - Camera Raw. This should indicate version 4.6 and if not then either the plug-in has been installed in the wrong folder of you have not removed the older version first and ACR is still using this older version.

"Check this by going to Help > About? An update to CS3 (version 10.0.1)"......this is what did the trick. I noticed there was no RAW mentioned in the drop down however there was a lot of updates hidden in there....so i downloaded all those and next minute the RAW appeared in the drop down.
I had a feeling that would do the trick. CR2 opened instantly in CS3.
Much happiness now and i thank you for saving my stress levels.
