What a confusion to resize and about resoloution
 

Hello Everybody:)

Is there anyone that could answer to these questions?

1) I'm Italian can I partecipate to the Phothographer of the year competition?

2) In the FAQ you can read: "Your photos should not exceed the maximum size of 5MB, in JPEG format –"

this means that they could be smaller for example 3mb 0 4mb?

2) Can a I partecipate to the competition with the same photos in different categories?

3) I followed the istructions to resize pictures on the website but I don't know if I did it right. As they explained I have chosen landscape format, enter the width as 2000 pixels;At the top of Image Size dialogue window I can see the image size before it's been saved.
UNFORTUNATELY it isn't a 5MB but a 7,60 mb (so too much?) and the weight in the propreties file is 606kb. It is right or not?
Otherwise to get the 5mb size as they required after many attempts I entered the width as 1622 pixels ( is it right?)

Anyone in the world can enter the competition and you can enter the same image it into more that one category.

The size limit is 5mb Jpeg file but anything under that limit is OK. So a 4mb or 3mb Jpeg file size is OK.

Why not use your image editing software to resize your image to 5mb or under before uploading the image.

As you are very kind can I ask you if a picture is 3mb is ok but when the commission will ask for the high- resolution version original file is it ok or can be erased by the judge?

sorry i forgot and if I have a 7 mb picture and ask me the original file is too much or in this case I can edit simply with a software to resize it?

If they ask for the original file then you don't need to resize it at all regardless of size. The reason for the request for the original is they might need to print it at full size in the mag if you win. :D

Just wondering what is the smallest size acceptable for magazine printing? Is hi-res 5mb and above? I've never quite understood it. Someone with a canon 400d are going to have much smaller image sizes than someone with a 5d or 1Ds arent they?

That depends on the magazine and the size they wish to print it or if it's just for the web. For the web it could be less than 9,000 bytes but for printing it could be 20mb or more for a two page spread. A small image on a page could be under 1mb. :D

I always send a minimum of 33 mb @300ppi images for magazines. Usually via writeable DVD. My Amateur Photographer published images were 3000 x 1937 pixels which gave me a file of 33.3 mb.

Sorry, but I think your are quoting Raw size whereas, we are talking Jpegs. A Jpeg of 33mb would equate to over 100mb as a raw file. :)
