Hi Pat, welcome to the forums.

Adobe can be a real pain with this as you can only run older versions of ACR in older versions of PS (meaning that if you buy a new camera you, theoretically, have to buy new softwarwe!).

However, I think that ACR4.6 will work in PSE5. The official Adobe download page and instructions are here. Follow the instructions for Elements 6.0 and (apparently) it will work for Elements 5.

I got this info from the Elements Village forums (link). They might be worth checking out!

Basically it's as Chris states. ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) is a plug-in to both Photoshop and Elements and NOT an application in it's own right. It was designed this way so that as newer cameras are released instead of the entire application having to be rewritten only the plug-in needs to be updated by adding support for these newer cameras. This usually happens on approximately a 3 monthy cycle.

So in direct answer to your question- yes it is possible as ACR is installed by default. Now if it's the case that you are unable to open your RAW files in ACR it may well be the case that your camera model, especially if it is a newer one, may not be recognised with the existing ACR plug-in that is compatible with Elements 5. If this is indeed the case, and you are happy with using Elements then two choices are open to you. Firstly, you might want to consider upgrading to the latest version (version 8) or, secondly, converting your RAW files to the DNG format using the FREE DNG converter available from Adobe.

You might also wish to consider giving us on the forum a bit more information e.g. have you tried opening your RAW images in ACR at all, what camera you are using and what Platform (Windows or Mac). Members will then have more information at their disposable and will be able to direct you to links for resolving any problems you may be experiencing in terms of updates etc.

Rather than go into a long explantion of what the DNG format is, assuming of course you are not already aware, then information can be found here: http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

Hope this helps a bit and of course, although I should have said it first, welcome to the forum.:)

Ok, the latest (official) version of ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) for Elements 5 is version 4.2. The good news is that both your Canon 350D and 40D cameras ARE supported in this version.

So, first of all follow these instructions:

1. Exit Photoshop Elements
2. Open My Computer
3. Double-click Local Disk (C)
4. Navigate to Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats
5. In this folder you will find a file called Camera Raw with the prefix .8bi - right click on the file > choose Explore and check the version number. If it is already version 4.2 close all Windows as the latest version of ACR is correctly installed in Elements 5.

6. If the .8bi file is any version earlier than 4.2 then click on this link http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3730 and download version 4.2 saving it to the desktop.
7. The downloaded file will be a zip file so double-click on it to unzip it and then place the .8bi file in the same folder as given in para 4. above using copy and paste. Windows will advice that there is already an .8bi file in this folder and ask whether you want to replace it - respond yes.
8. Close all windows - the ACR plug-in is now installed in Elements and should be working.

Now locate one RAW file (.CR2) shot with either of your cameras, right click on it and in the pop-up menu choose to open with Elements. The Window that will (or should) now open will be Adobe Camera Raw.

Note: Para 4 is extremely important as ACR will not open/work if the plug-in (.8bi file) is placed anywhere other than in this location.

hi forseti thanks for your help your directions were spot on i now have camera raw also thanks to chris-p regards patb

You're welcome Pat - glad it worked out. You might just want to make a mental note for the future that in the event that you ever come to replace the 350D or 40D for a more recent model then in all probability it won't be supported in Elements 5 because as you've now discovered the latest ACR plug-in for Elements 5 is version 4.2. You'll then have to consider either upgrading to a later version of Elements or converting those newer RAW files to the DNG format. Regards from a cold and snowy southern Germany to Ireland.:)
