Developing a set of rules for the Comp

I have entered as many of the rules from the old site as I can remember, changing them as required to suit this site. Please have a read and if you think they require changing or others added please discuss it here.

General guidelines for the DCM weekly competition

1. To be valid images must be taken on the Fri,Sat,Sun of the competition, that is during Friday Saturday and Sunday in your time zone.

2. The subject must be set so that no one, will be excluded by limit of location, environment or equipment etc.

3. Generally there are no limits Post processing, unless the subject setter has specified basic adjustments only. Basic adjustments would be Levels brightness and sharpness etc. There is no restriction on equipment that can be used.

4. Images submitted after 12:00 UK time on the Monday may not be included as the poll thread must be set up. The poll runs for 2 days from the posting of the poll so that it generally ends mid day Wednesday.

5. The winner must set the new topic before Friday to give entrants time to think of ideas and get ready for the shoot, the competition starts on Friday, no images taken before that time are valid and will not be included in the poll.

6. The winner is then responsible for starting the Chat thread, Entry thread, and setting and managing the poll

7. Voters may not vote on their own image, the poll is set as open so you can see who appreciated your work.

Please join in stating OK or otherwise. Once agreed we can create a link to the rules when we set up the comp.

Hi Bob,

Sometimes it may be interesting to have some limits on Post processing - but I'm happy to go with whatever other folk are happy with.

you could have one week which would be an off camara week,no no processing what, soever.

We`ve done that in the past re: no processing. One issue is what does "straight out of the camera " mean given that you can do a variet of things in camera dependinf on model such as black and white, sepia, d lighting for nikons etc. You`d have to say jpeg as shot. We used to have fun when people said "only basic editing" which varied trmendously from one person to another.
Interesting the point re: PR hosted images only. The only way I can get a clickable image is via flickr and when settign the poll I`ve found them the same to do - so just wonder why on that one. I tend to be putting a copy of my comp entries into my PR gallery too but never link them here as people wanted to see clickable versions.

Why not leave it up to the winner to decide how much Post Processing is allowed. I don't think in the days of RAW images, none would be an option.
Even basic Compact Cameras can do a hell of a lot of processing on jpeg images using it's own software.
These days of saying I just took the picture and never touched it means nothing.

I'm OK with the current set of rules. Definitely, I would still go with what the majority wants.

A couple of thoughts:

I don't understand about the 'clickable' restriction idea either. It was the same wherever the image was and only requires a couple of clicks - in Opera 'copy image address' and 'copy link address'.

Secondly I would extend the time period for the taking of a valid image from the current two days to any time from when the challenge is set up until midnight on the following Sunday. It will still be really tight, but would accommodate those who have heavy weekend commitments. We might even get some more entrants. Possibly.

As for editing restrictions, I do think straight out of the camera is possible - just set out that the entry must be a colour jpg with the EXIF data clearly showing no edit date.

The upshot is that I am happy to go with the flow, whatever the consensus turns out the be; and I know it won't be very far from Bob's proposals.

Keep talking guys, if we reach a point where we need to vote on a rule we can do a poll for it. The post processing is a hot potato that has always had everyone devided to a degree.

The click-able image problem only happens to me whe the link is not taken directly from the url space like http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4048/4197602996_f1e1c5cd3c.jpg but it could just be my method, so we can easily scrub that one if a process is described, I'll test it here now H and see if it works.

It didn't work for me, jinky's image opens in a new window, but its the same size.

to get it to work I had to do a little hack to get this code that does work

( I've removed the [URL from each end of this so you can see the code)

Click the image below to see it work properly.

I have added another that I forgot, People should not vote for their own image :) I know most of us like our image that's why we made it, but the idea is to support someone else.

I don't think there is any such thing as straight out of the Camera shot unless you are talking about a RAW Image and even then the RAW editor gives you a starter for ten. I personally (not this time) like to keep it to a minimum whenever I can. Anything overdone is easily spotted and then it is down to the voter to decide if they like it.
