Printing a PDF file
 

I cant seem to print a PDF file that has been sent to me on my canon pro 9500.
When I go to print the paper just passes through but with no print
Any ideas, can't this printer print PDF files.

It could be that a security has been set on the file that lets you view it but won't let you print it. Try downloading Adobe's PDF reader and use that to print. It's free from Adobe's website and have posted the link below. :D

[B]Try adjusting the advanced set up on your printer first - as most printers should be able print PDF files - consult your user manual for details - if you still have it - otherwise - all the info you need can be found in the Canon site.

Also when in that site - make certain you have downloaded the latest drivers for your printer - especially if it is the Canon Pro 9500 that you have - and not the newer MkII version.

Personally I cannot see the need to update your Adobe Reader - as suggested - as all Adobe readers , irrespective of versions - are designed to READ only (any PDF files).
That is presuming you have a version of Adobe Reader of course - if not - the suggestion has some merit - but will not in itself solve your printing problem - the solution of which almost certainly lies with the printer "set-up".

You can't read or print Acrobat version 8 PDF's with earlier versions of PDF reader.

Oh yes you can. :p

Adobe Acrobat 9 is the current version and its basic PDF "flattened" files can be read and printed by Adobe Reader 4 and later (most users surely have this version - its been around for years - has it not) - only layers and some other advanced features cannot be replicated - see the added link below - regarding "compatability issues" :confused:

Interesting (or boring) as this may be - it is not helping the poster with his original problem - his printer's advanced setting will have to be checked - first and foremost. ;)

As I stated in my earlier post, it depends on the security set by the original producer of the PDF if you can view/print the document. :p

I've used Xerox laser printers since they first came out, both B & W as well as colour to print from a mainframe computer. :)

Without wishing to insert myself between this obvious clash of personalities, I would never-the-less wish to question an assertion you made OB. Surely any security settings made in a PDF document are designed to apply limitations on how one can [B]use[/B] a PDF document. For instance, several times a month I have cause to save various PDF documents to my hard drive and when I click on the icon 'Save' an Acrobat pop-up menu appears advising me that I won't be able to apply edits to this document (or words to that effect). Recently I printed out a Canon camera User Manual which in the process printed the word 'Copy' across the document although this didn't appear in the monitor displayed document.

Surely, these examples (and others) are the sole purpose of the security settings and not as to whether it can be [B]viewed[/B] or not. After all, what's the point in published a PDF document if it cannot be viewed?

It's not a question of viewing but printing that the original poster reported as a problem. Security setting in Adobe's Acrobat can stop you printing a document, hence the blank pages the original poster found whilst trying to print. :D

Thats true, you can set a PDF file so that it can't be printed but it wouldn't lead to blank pages being pulled through the printer. It simply removes the option to print and you can't get to the print dialogue box.

That's not entirely true. There are certain backwards compatibility issues with Reader 5 and earlier. However it's unlikely to be an issue as Acrobat 6 and upwards have been around for years now.

If you can see a print dialogue box then it is most likely to be printer settings or a hardware issue. Can you print other documents, either other pdf's or perhaps a word or excel file? If not then I would suggest that you have a communications error which is [I]usually[/I] down to a cracked USB cable or wonky connector.
If you [I]can[/I] print other things then it is most likely to be, as Gil said, local printer software settings.

Forgive me for asking OB but it was [B][U]you[/U][/B] who mentioned the word [B][I]viewing[/I][/B] in an earlier post (Post No. 6). :D
