speedlite

i bought a second hand speedlite 420EX yesterday - no box or accessories. it works fine with my 1100D for autoflash, but has no manual controls (which doesn't bother me right now!). if i wanted to use it 'off camera' what would i need? i know i'd need a cable or wireless adaptor thingy, but how do i get it to stand up?! i know that's a daft question, but this is a brand new area for me lol...

Hi Alex,

If you look at the front page of the manual here http://www.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/lens/Speedlite_420EX_manual.pdf you'll see that there is a little plastic stand that the flash sits in. You obviously don't need a Canon one as the hotshoe is a universal size, so this should fit the bill http://www.amazon.co.uk/Universial-580EXII-430exII-Olympus-flashlight/dp/B006NKQSIE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1362918513&sr=8-3

ah, ok...if i'm using a flash cable to join the flash and the camera does this fit into the little plastic stand too (see - told you i don't know anything...!). thanks for the link to the manual, will have a good read of that.

I'm not sure if you already have the cable, but they generally have a female and male hotshoe adapter on the end, so the flash slides into this and then the adapter slides into the stand.

Here's a link to hopefully illustrate what I mean http://www.amazon.co.uk/Extension-Off-Camera-2-Hot-Shoe-speedlites-approximately/dp/B008CVUK22/ref=pd_cp_ce_1

thanks, that makes sense. don't have a cable yet - am trying to decide if i want one, or if i want a wireless system, or if i want either. thanks for all your help!

I'd suggest getting used to the flash before you buy either cable or wireless triggers. Oh, but you might want to buy some rechargeable batteries :D. My speedlite seems to eat them like crazy.

Flash cables can be a little restricting, for this reason I prefrer such as these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yongnuo-RF-603-wireless-flash-trigger-Canon-C3-1D-5D-II-7D-50D-40D-30D-20D-/110830683928?_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14513%26meid%3D6166653440407086270%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1048%26rk%3D3%26sd%3D300762679168%26

These triggers also double up as a wireless trigger (remote firing of your camera)

I use these and found them to be very good.

For flashgun stands have a look here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flash-stand-4-Canon-Nikon-Nissin-Flash-Guns-speedlites-/130857136201?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_CameraFlashUnits_JN&hash=item1e77b17049
