Family Photo Session

I have recently purchased a background white vinyl to try out shooting friends and families in my spare time. I managed to get it all set up last weekend and this was my favourite image of my family that I took.

I have never really been a fan of the white background and family in the foreground style of photography, however, after trying it I was quite happy with the result although I had quite a few issues with lighting off of flashguns.

I was hoping for some critique on this image and also any lighting tips people have for this type of photography.

Thats a lovely portrait Paul, the only thing that doesn't work for me is I think you've pulled a little to much colour out of it. Im no professional so its just my taste :) cracking shot all the same

I'm with Mark. Too desaturated. Normally I like desaturated photos but I think for this kind of portrait you need the colours to be vibrant and fun like the subjects.

Mark, Beatnik69,

Thanks for your comments, I will have a play and try different variations on the saturation.

Cheers, Paul

I really like this shot , it has bags of fun and a great twist on the usual rather boring family portrait .
Quite like the subtle colouring , it lets you concentrate on the people in the image and what their doing .

I'm afraid I can't help out with any lighting tips because I wouldn't have the foggiest where to start .

I really like this,
I can see what Mark has said, bring them colours back out and it will do the picture justice. One thing that does catch my eye is the shadows on the floor, I guess you put the sheet over carpet? Maybe edit them out I.M.O. Other than that your lighting seems to be very good.

Markymark,

Thanks for your post. Yeah I had the vinyl sheet on carpet which has caused the creases in it. I have edited this again and tried to make these a little less obvious.

My aim is to get as much right in camera so I don't have to do so much in Lightroom and photoshop unfortunately my software skills far out weigh my photography ones at present!! I am thoroughly enjoying the learning process though!

Thanks, Paul

The shadows didn't actually annoy me as it showed that the subjects are stting somewhere rather than floating in some sterile white room. :)
