The start of the walk was a small layby with facilities for a few cars to park.
Dodging the April showers I decided to do a Causey Pike walk that is a shorter router with a more direct ascent up Ellas crag for those who would like to just get stuck into Causey Pike!
The start of this walk is very steep (Ellas Crag) and you dont get much opportunity to ease into it. The ascent involves a lot of scrambling and rock hopping. At this point I stowed my camera in my rucksack as it was getting knocked about a bit. I suggest you give some thought to that at this point too!!!
Once you have reached the top of Ellas Crag you meet Rowling End. This is a flat plateau that gives some rest after the steep ascent. Follow the path through the bracken and you will meet up with Sleet Hause which is at the base of the final ascent to Causey Pike. You are approx 500 feet from the summit at this point.
There are two ways to get to the summit of Causey. In this route it takes you the "safer" way around the rocks and up to the summit. This prevents you from quite a steep rock climb!!!
Once on the summit of Causey Pike, there is a nice ridge walk along the top to Scar Crags with 360o degree views of surrounding fell ranges. (Whiteside, Sand Hill, Grisedale Pike). Follow Scar Crag to Sail pass. You will start to descend where you will see the old copper mine in the distance. In this walk you are walking parallel to the copper mine path on one side while the Stoneycroft Gill stream on the other.
The return path is a rocky gentle descent that finally comes to a small gorge. In this walk you cross the gorge at a safe place. Although if it has been raining - the gorge will be deeper and fast flowing, you may wish to continue to the end of the path at Stoneycroft and follow the road back to the car park. | Make: |
