Re: Fly

Great detail in the eye , I'd love to know what lens you used and your set up .

I promise not to tell anyone else .

Re: Fly

Thank you very much for the kudos.

My setup is not a secret:

camera: nikon d5100
lense: old analog nikkor 28-80 with a manual apperture (i shoot with f16 or f22 which gives me 16 and/or 22 mm focal depth

btw. I usually shoot with iso 200... here I forgot to change it (i guess its 400) so some grain comes into play.
even in RAW and denoising in apperture does not clean it completely away.

the magic: a revers ring with a 35mm extending ring

a side flash grip for mounting the flash shooting from left an not stright at the object

and a led lamp attached to it as an additional light for focusing - its pretty dark at f16 in the viewer

the flash is a nissin di622 mark II with a lastolite 28" softbox

the original resolution:

Re: Fly

Thanks for the info very interesting .
I had heard that you could get amazing results from a fairly standard lens and a reversing ring and this proves it .
You seem to get a much clearer and deeper DOF with this setup than I do with the Sigma 105mm macro even at f/22 .

Thanks again for taking the time to reply .

Re: Fly

actually you are gettin' into microscopy with that system. I've posted an image of a flower petal here, where you can see the individual cell bodies.

it's pretty easy to shoot static objects where you really can get very close and without shaking... i shoot with a shutterspeed at 1/160 or 1/200 during sunlight - here you can get really amazing sharpness. at the evening the picture get more dramatic (black background ) but with costs of shutterspeed and of course ISO. and the bugs are more cooperative as it gets colder

as I hadn't the money for a good macro lense I decided to use a revers ring and than there is this:

so I'm practicing.... still practicing
