Canon mirrorless cameras

Canon came to the mirrorless market quite late and hasn't really pursued it with the same kind of vigour as Fujifilm, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic. That said, its range of cameras has been growing steadily, along with a modest collection of lenses. Sure, these may not have the appeal as some rival options right now, but when you consider that these cameras hold DSLR-sized sensors in a downsized body, you're not necessarily sacrificing quality over Canon's most esteemed DSLR line.

Canon's habit of keeping old models running after introducing new ones does leave the range looking a bit of a muddle, so we'll do our best to sort it out as we go along. The prices we quote are for camera/lens bundles, but some of these cameras may be available body-only, or with a different kit lens, so keep your eyes open for different combinations.

Canon EOS M100 with EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £519 after £50 cashback/$599

Now from £499 at Amazon

Now from $499 at Amazon

Canon's newest mirrorless camera has just a few external controls and is designed to be as simple as possible for the novice audience at which it's aimed. Nevertheless, it boasts Canon's latest 24MP Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor and it produces great-quality pictures too, though photo experts might get annoyed with the reliance on its touch-screen interface for routine camera adjustments. It's pretty new, so prices haven't fallen in any big way yet. The best deal we've seen is at Amazon  where there are some limited stock at £499.

Canon EOS M6 with EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £649 after £50 cashback/$899

£50 off the Canon EOS M6 body and kits - from £449 (after cashback) with code BF17-CANON-50

The EOS M6 is essentially the same as the EOS M5, but without the built-in viewfinder (though you can get one as an optional accessory). It might be considered to be a drawback, but not having a viewfinder does at least make the body slightly smaller and neater. If we were to choose a Canon mirrorless camera for enthusiasts, it would come down to this or the EOS M5. If you already have a Canon DSLR, you can use your existing lenses on EOS M cameras via a lens adaptor too, so it's a good option as an upgrade an an older model or as a backup camera to one you still intend to use. The EOS M6 also updated the previous EOS M3, and it looks like there is still some stock left of that model, so don't be too surprised if Canon uses Cyber Monday as an opportunity to get these out at a tempting price.

Canon EOS M5 with EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £969/$1049

£799 body only deal available at Wex

It's the only EOS M with a built-in viewfinder, and it's also rather good. Essentially, it's like having Canon's powerful enthusiast-level EOS 80D DSLR crammed into a camera that's half the size. It comes with Canon's latest APS-C format 24MP Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor, and the only thing against it so far has been its relatively high purchase cost – so we're hoping Cyber Monday will knock that down a bit to the point where this camera becomes a whole lot more tempting.

Canon DSLRs

Canon sells many different DSLRs, but a lot of these are older models still on sale alongside newer ones – and some are more desirable than others. Here's our take on what's hot and what's not.

Canon EOS 1300D / EOS Rebel T6 with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £339 after £20 cashback/$449

It's Canon's cheapest entry-level DSLR, and although it's basic, its a perfectly adequate camera for a student or a cash-strapped beginner that just wants to get started. It has one of Canon's older 18MP sensors, but the quality is pretty good nonetheless, and there's enough manual control for anyone that's advanced beyond the basics and now wants to develop their photographic skills.

Canon EOS 200D / EOS Rebel SL2 with EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

  • Empty list

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £489 after £50 cashback/$699
• Best pre-Cyber Monday deal so far: Canon EOS 200D + 18-55mm IS lens plus free bag and battery - just £499 at Canon UK

The EOS 100D, this camera's predecessor, was an attempt by Canon to make a novice-friendly DSLR that was as small as possible, and it succeeded – up to a point. The EOS 100D is small for a DSLR, but today's mirrorless cameras are smaller still, so it's hardly a killer feature any more. The EOS 100D also uses Canon's older 18MP sensor, which is perfectly fine but not in the same class as the 24MP sensor in the EOS 100D's replacement, the EOS 200D. The EOS 200D is a much better camera all round, and only very slightly larger. It's a top buy as a super-compact beginner DSLR, with a modern sensor and a handy articulating touch-sensitive display.

Canon EOS 750D / Rebel T6i with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £549 after £50 cashback/$749

This and the related EOS 760D share the same 24MP Hybrid CMOS AF III sensor – the one directly before the version in the latest models – and essentially the same internal hardware as each other too. The only real differences are external, where the EOS 760D adds a top-plate LCD screen and a second control dial. You might still see the EOS 760D on sale at many dealers and for less than the newer EOS 800D / EOS Rebel T7i which replaces it (below). It's slightly behind in tech, but the EOS 750D is a good deal cheaper.

Canon EOS 800D / EOS Rebel T7i with EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £769 after £50 cashback/$899

With the EOS 750D and 760D, Canon essentially produced a beginner and an enthusiast version of the same camera, and it's repeated the same trick with its EOS 800D and 77D. These are Canon's latest beginner and enthusiast models respectively, sharing the same new 24MP Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor but with a different exterior layout.

Canon EOS 77D with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £834 after £85 cashback/$999

Essentially the enthusiast's version of the EOS 800D, the EOS 77D boasts a top-plate LCD screen and a second control dial to appeal more to that audience. It sits just below the EOS 80D, and is actually worth considering as an EOS 80D alternative, because it gives little away in features but saves you a whole lot of money.

Canon EOS 80D with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £1011/$1249

This is Canon's ultimate do-it-all, enthusiast-level camera, and ideal for photographers who like to tackle a whole range of subjects. You get Canon's latest 24MP Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor, a fully articulating touch-screen display, 7fps continuous shooting and a 45-point AF system. It's slightly undermined by the new EOS 77D (above) which is very close in specs but smaller and cheaper, but many photographers will prefer the EOS 80D's chunkier build.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II (body only)

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £1349/$1349

The EOS 7D Mark II is Canon's most expensive APS-C camera, but also the most powerful – at least for sports and action photography. It has an advanced 65-point autofocus system, sophisticated focus tracking and a 20.2MP Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor. That's 4MP less than cameras further down the Canon range, but the payback is a super-fast 10fps continuous shooting speed, which makes this camera ideal for sports enthusiasts.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II (body only)

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £1849/$1999

The EOS 6D was Canon's first shot at an affordable full-frame DSLR for enthusiasts, and it's still on sale now, despite being superseded by the EOS 6D Mark II. The original EOS 6D could be a real bargain this Cyber Monday if you can find it at a knock-down price, but the EOS 6D Mark II is faster and has a higher resolution 26MP sensor, and is generally a much better camera all round. So, if you can afford it, choose this instead. It's a lot more expensive than the old EOS 6D, but it's still Canon's cheapest full-frame DSLR right now.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV (body only)

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £3229/$3399

This is Canon's professional workhorse camera, one that's capable of taking most commercial assignments in its stride. It has a 30MP Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor, a Dual Pixel RAW mode – which, ahem, nobody quite understands – 7fps continuous shooting, an advanced 61-point autofocus system and 4K video capabilities. If this is the camera you need for making a living, do check out any Cyber Monday offers. The EOS 5D Mark IV holds its price well, so even a modest saving won't come along that often.

Canon EOS 5DS (body only)

• Pre-Cyber Monday price: £4799/$5699

The EOS 1D-X Mark II is the ultimate tool for sports, press and action photographers. It's expensive, but what you're paying for is its amazing 14fps continuous shooting speed (16fps in Live View), advanced 61-point autofocus system and its ability to capture up to 170 14bit uncompressed Raw files in a burst. If you don't know whether you need this camera's power then the answer is you don't – but if you know this is the only tool that can meet your professional needs, Cyber Monday may well just be your chance to grab a bargain!
