Nikon D810 vs Canon 5D Mark III comparison: full-frame DSLRs go head-to-head

The Nikon D810 is a refinement of the successful formula Nikon created with the D800/E. Video shooting is finally more or less brought up to date and there are some neat features, such as Exposure Smoothing for silky time-lapse sequences that expand the camera’s versatility.

Cynics might see the D810 as a reheating of the D800/E. The resolution remains unchanged, there’s a minor speed bump in terms of continuous shooting, and some of the video features bring it more in line with the 5D Mark III rather than truly surpassing it.

But make no mistake, this is a tighter, more adaptable offering from Nikon. A more rounded camera than its predecessor, the D810 is likely to ensure the D8XX line finds a home beyond the camera bags of landscape and studio photographers.

The Canon 5D Mark III remains a hugely desirable camera and is still arguably the better all-rounder. It offers slightly faster continuous shooting, albeit with smaller resolution files, more cross-type AF sensors and class-leading video quality.

That said, there are plenty of Canon photographers who’d like more resolution and more dynamic range.

High-resolution DSLR photography just got more interesting. Your move, Canon…
