You might think you need a grand plan to create an image like this. But it doesn’t always turn out like that.
“I took the photographs for the collage when I was walking the dog around the Raval area of Barcelona, where I live,” reveals Geoff Harrison.
“I noticed pedestrians walking in silhouette past a large gate and in front of a sunlit white wall.
“I was carrying my camera that day – a Canon EOS 450D with a Tamron 18-200mm zoom – so just started taking shots. I ended up shooting around 80 frames.
“The collage idea only came about later when I was looking at the thumbnails and liked the effect of seeing all of the images on one screen.
“Aligning the photographs in PaintShop Pro took quite a long time. I hadn’t used a tripod to take the shots, so all the images were slightly differently orientated.
“I did try to re-create the collage with another set of shots taken using a tripod, but somehow it just wasn’t the same!
“Collages can be effective for creating interesting results, even if no individual image is particularly strong or of high resolution. I recently created a 2×1-metre poster of 80 or so favourite Instagram pictures.
“I used the Instaport web service (www.instaport.me) to download the images and CollageIt (www.collageitfree.com) to create the collage.”

* To make the ‘stitch’ appear seamless, choose a spot that features a clean view or a repetitive pattern.
* Consider reducing the file size of the individual images prior to building the collage.
