Had enough of looking at painfully moody shots of children looking far too earnest for their age?

Perhaps it’s time to shoot the antidote: fun, vibrant scenes that enable kids to really express their personality.

The biggest challenge of shooting a light-hearted family picture is coming up with a concept.

“We talk a lot about ideas during meals,” says amateur photographer and photo artist John Wilhelm. “My wife is a costume designer and has a very creative head. The kids are also starting to develop their own ideas, but most of them can’t be realised!”

John regularly uploads his entertaining images to photo-sharing networks, where his vivid, distinctive treatments draw plenty of admiration.

Forget the Photoshop work, though – we’re more interested in how he stops his kids from getting bored when dad demands another photo session!

“I guess if you have a solid emotional connection to your kids, they can feel that something is important for you and they will support you – but obviously not for too long!” admits John.

“If concentration is about to fade, there are always a few sweets in my pocket…”

    Get started today…
    * Keep a notebook handy so you can sketch out ideas for future shots.
    * Get your camera settings and lighting fixed beforehand – you’ll need to keep the photo sessions moving quickly to prevent boredom.
    * Use large apertures, high ISOs or flash to achieve the fast shutter speed required to freeze the movement of active kids.
    * Let your children dress how they want and choose their own expression and pose. Once they’ve got that out of their system, you can ask them to quickly help you out.
