Nikon D4s vs D4: 07 AF system
Nikon has kept with its tried and trusted 51-point Multi-CAM 3500FX autofocus sensor in the Nikon D4s, but has reworked the autofocus algorithms to produce faster lock-on and more reliable tracking of moving subjects.
There’s also a brand new ‘Group area AF’ mode which uses a cluster of five AF points which you can move around the frame, just as you would a single AF point.
This new Group area AF mode is designed for fast and erratic subjects moving against a high-contrast background – a soccer match is a good example.
It should provide faster subject acquisition and reduce the possibility of the AF focusing ‘through’ the players and on the background instead.
Nikon D4s vs D4: 08 Movies
The need to shoot movies as well as stills is becoming a fact of life for many pros, and the Nikon D4s builds on the abilities of the Nikon D4 to stay ahead of the game.
Both cameras shoot 1920 x 1080 full HD movies at the regular 30p, 25p and 24p frame rates, but the Nikon D4s adds ‘double-speed’ 60p and 50p frame rates for capturing slow-motion action at full HD resolution.
It also adds auto ISO control to the manual mode when shooting movies – you can set the shutter speed and lens aperture to the values you want and leave the auto ISO to adjust to changing lighting conditions.
And on the Nikon D4s you can now record movies simultaneously in-camera and to an external HDMI device.
Nikon D4s vs D4: 09 Sound
In video, the sound is as important as the footage, and the Nikon D4s adds the ability to adjust the sound level during recording, and to switch the sound range between ‘Wide’ and ‘Voice’.
