Start small with something that can be laid out on a sheet of stiff A3 white card and placed on the ground near a set of patio doors.

Use a tripod that enables you to position the camera high enough and parallel with the ground as you’ll want to be working at a smallish aperture and a low ISO sensitivity to pick out all the fine details.

Use reflectors to bounce light into darker areas, activate Live View, and be prepared to touch up the background when you process the images.

* For the background to be captured as bright white, dial in positive exposure compensation.
* Activate Highlight Alert during playback and check the histogram – a little over-exposure on the background is no problem, particularly if you shoot raw.
