Shooting city views from street level only allows you to reveal so much. To capture the full scale of urban sprawl, you’ll need a head for heights. Roland Shainidze grabbed this shot from St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

“Being in London for only three days and having a long list of places I wanted to visit and capture, I did not really have the luxury of selecting a specific day or time to take each photo,” he says.

“So, after climbing hundreds of steps and pushing my way through a crowded St Paul’s, I made it to the top of the dome. It was a typical London day – grey, windy, and wet.

“When faced with the whole panorama of the London cityscape to choose from, it was a challenge to select what I wanted to capture.

I decided to use my extreme wide-angle lens, a Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L USM II, to cover as much of the view and details as I could in one frame.

“Instead of going with a typical landscape or panoramic view, I decided to go with a portrait-format shot, and include a section of the roof of St Paul’s.

This enabled me to juxtapose the modern buildings of London with a hint of the ancient structure of St Paul’s, and still maintain the grey, cloudy sky.

“Using an extreme wide-angle lens with this perspective creates distortion, which is not always the best-case scenario, unless this is your intention. Make sure you fix the distortion in Photoshop or similar software.”

* For safety, fit a camera strap when working at height.
* To help keep the horizon level, use the lines of AF points in the viewfinder or activate your camera’s grid display.
* If you’re including a bright sky as part of the composition, use a graduated ND filter to help balance the exposure.
